The Legendary Siblings begins with an injury, an act of care, and a love that goes in the wrong direction.

Jiang Feng, sworn brother to the great swordsman Yan Nantian, is carried wounded into Yihua Palace. Its two formidable mistresses, Yaoyue and her younger sister Lianxing, tend him and both fall in love. Jiang Feng falls instead for Hua Yuenu, the maid who brings his medicine and washes his wounds.

No promise has been broken. No one has been deceived. A man simply loves someone other than the women who saved him. Almost all the novel’s blood grows from this fact for which no one is guilty.

A wrong committed against refusal

Hua Yuenu becomes pregnant, and the lovers plan to escape. Jiang Feng sends his servant Jiang Qin to summon Yan Nantian. Jiang Qin sells the message twice—to the Twelve Zodiac bandits and to Yihua Palace.

The fugitives are surrounded. Hua gives birth to twin boys and dies of her wounds; Jiang Feng kills himself beside her. When Yaoyue arrives, the two newborns are all that remain of the refusal she cannot reverse. She prepares to kill them.

Lianxing cannot defeat or persuade her sister. She therefore invents a cruelty large enough to resemble revenge: separate the twins, raise them without knowledge of each other, and arrange for them to kill one another as adults. Yaoyue likes the idea. Death today would be too brief.

The plan that threatens to consume two lives is first spoken by the only person trying to save them. Lianxing purchases the present with a future she does not own.

Two children on a drawing board

Yaoyue takes one child back to Yihua Palace and names him Hua Wuque—“without flaw.” He receives exquisite martial training, perfect manners, and one unexamined assignment: someday he must kill a man named Jiang Xiaoyu.

The other infant is left for Yan Nantian. Yaoyue assumes the swordsman will turn him into an instrument of revenge. Yan does arrive, but a false lead draws him into Villains’ Valley, where he is crippled. The child stays with the valley’s notorious residents and grows into Xiao Yu’er, a trickster trained in deception, disguise, escape, and survival.

One upbringing follows Yaoyue’s blueprint almost exactly. The other departs from it at once. Yet neither child becomes the thing his educators intended. The villains want a weapon and raise a generous troublemaker. Yihua Palace produces perfect obedience, but cannot remove Hua Wuque’s reluctance to kill his friend.

They become friends first

Years later the brothers meet without knowing their relation. This order matters. Before either knows the role assigned to the other, they eat together, rescue people together, and enjoy one another’s company. The plan calls them enemies; experience supplies a different fact.

Yaoyue has waited through their entire childhoods for one afternoon. Waiting can look passive, but hers is a form of possession. She can endure twenty years because the desired ending is hers. The years belong less clearly to the two people being prepared for it.

Lianxing waits too. Her delay keeps the brothers alive, but each year also strengthens the machinery that will bring them together as opponents. She can disclose the truth only at the last moment, when Yaoyue can no longer kill them in infancy.

By then, however, another history exists: each brother already knows the other as a person. The blueprint can arrange their schools, names, instructions, and meeting place. It cannot make that encounter mean only what its author intended.
