Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
The most powerful man in this novel does not appear under his own face until the end.
He is Gongzi Yu. He possesses immense wealth, a network of fighters, and a ranking that can make celebrated men kill one another for a higher place. The jianghu knows his name and rarely sees the person behind it.
Gongzi Yu appears elderly, but he and Fu Hongxue are the same age: thirty-seven. Time has not aged him. Possession has. He owns so much that preserving ownership consumes the life that might have enjoyed it.
Gongzi Yu therefore needs a younger face. He recruits Yan Nanfei, the first name on the ranking and a swordsman who has spent seventeen years practicing his draw.
Yan is not kidnapped. He accepts fame, wealth, and access to a power his own name cannot command. Thereafter he appears and fights as Gongzi Yu while the real man remains protected behind him.
The mask separates the person who acts from the person who owns the result.
Fu also enters the book at thirty-seven, long after learning in Border Town Prodigal that his assigned ancestry was false. He still carries the black saber, but no longer lives for the sentence “You are Bai Tianyu’s son.” Yan and Mingyue Xin approach him through a shifting mixture of friendship, deception, and attack. Yan twice loses to him. Fu twice declines to kill him.
Another absence organizes the plot: the Peacock Plume. The legendary weapon once belonged to Peacock Manor but has long been lost. Gongzi Yu does not need to invent it from nothing. He needs only to activate the reputation left behind by the missing object.
Rivals converge on the manor, which is destroyed after news of the loss spreads. Qiu Shuiqing entrusts his lover Zhuo Yuzhen to Fu before dying.
The novel complicates Zhuo’s identity through doubles, impersonation, and conflicting appearances. The safest conclusion is not that one clearly identified woman performs a single role throughout, but that Fu is repeatedly forced to judge among identical faces and incompatible stories. The missing plume and Gongzi Yu’s mask mirror one another: what people pursue need not be present, and the face they trust need not belong to the person before them.
Fu survives the staged betrayals and successive assassins until he reaches Gongzi Yu’s estate. His final opponent wears the famous face. Fu wins and removes the mask. Under it is Yan Nanfei.
The genuine Gongzi Yu is the “old man” Fu has already encountered. He has risked no body in the duel, yet he owns the fear produced by his substitute. With Yan defeated, the position is vacant again.
He offers it to Fu: the mask, wealth, organization, and command of the jianghu.
The offer resembles the identity Fu received as a child. “You are Bai Tianyu’s son” came with a name, an enemy, a technique, and a lifetime’s use. This new identity is equally complete. The difference is that Fu now sees the whole arrangement and is asked for an answer.
He says no.
No second duel with the real Gongzi Yu is necessary. The hidden man’s greatest power is the belief that his position must be desirable. When the most qualified successor refuses it, the wealth and fame suddenly reveal what they cannot provide.
Gongzi Yu acknowledges that his life cannot continue this way and withdraws with Mingyue Xin. Fu leaves the estate and returns to Zhou Ting, the seventeen-year-old woman who cared for him while he was wounded without first asking him to inhabit a grand name.
After all the killings and traps, Fu’s achievement sounds modest: he defeats one substitute and refuses to become the next. For a man whose childhood was occupied by a ready-made identity, however, that refusal is the novel’s most complete action.
He does not destroy Gongzi Yu’s face. He leaves it with no one willing to wear it.
