Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
The novel begins in a carriage. Li Xunhuan coughs, then returns to carving the same woman he has carved for ten years. He never completes the eyes. He buries one eyeless figure and begins another.
Readers readily understand the carving as devotion. The cough is treated the same way. Li drinks continuously, refuses treatment, owns almost nothing, and never settles anywhere. These details create the familiar image of a man whose suffering proves the depth of his feeling.
Li’s famous act is giving Lin Shiyin and his estate to Long Xiaoyun in repayment for saving his life. The jianghu calls it loyalty. His second act has no single name: he treats his own life as another possession that can be spent. The culture calls that devotion.
The two acts move in opposite directions but use the same hand. One disposes of other people for the sake of a moral story; the other disposes of the self. In both, a person becomes material for completing an ideal.
Li is not a man who begins with nothing. He belongs to a family of examination laureates, briefly holds office, commands wealth and status, and possesses a martial skill almost no one can answer. He has a home, a future marriage, and a garden full of plum trees.
He relinquishes these things one by one. The novel’s recurring cough records the final transfer. His body is the only estate he cannot legally give away, so he spends it by neglect.
Self-destruction can look private because the same person appears to be both owner and loss. The novel quietly shows otherwise. Tie Chuanjia serves Li for years and dies for him. Guo Songyang meets him once in combat, becomes his friend, and dies testing Shangguan Jinhong. A-Fei is injured rescuing him and later nearly loses their friendship. Lin Shiyin lives inside the lie meant to “free” her. Long Xiaoyun receives the gift, then spends a decade fearing its giver.
Even Li’s attempt to rescue A-Fei from Lin Xian’er repeats his old habit. He asks Lü Fengxian to kill her. He reaches for a completed solution rather than allowing A-Fei to look, fail, and recover his own judgment. Li is generous, but his generosity often leaves no room for the person who must live with it.
Sun Xiaohong enters as a storyteller. She knows exactly how the jianghu narrates Li: peerless dagger, ruined love, noble renunciation. Yet when she sees him cough, she does not convert blood into beauty. She thinks he needs a doctor.
Her demand is almost embarrassingly ordinary: stay alive. In a book full of people praising what Li gives up, she is the only one who asks him to stop giving.
This is not a request that he become selfish. It is a refusal to treat care as admiration from a safe distance. To love someone who keeps spending himself is sometimes to decline the role of grateful audience.
Li eventually enters a sealed chamber to face Shangguan. A-Fei waits outside, ready to fight if the wrong man emerges. Li comes out alive. Shangguan is dead; the Gold Coin Clan will dissolve; Lin Shiyin and her son leave; A-Fei sails abroad.
Li leaves with Sun Xiaohong.
The ending is exceptional because survival, for once, is not treated as the lesser alternative to sacrifice. Li has spent the novel among people who process others—Shangguan processes subordinates, Lin Xian’er processes admirers, Bai Xiaosheng processes fighters into ranks. Li appears different because he processes himself. The object changes, not the logic.
Sun interrupts that logic without offering a grander one. She simply wants the person, not the proof produced by his suffering.
The wooden figures remain buried without eyes. Li once explains that he cannot bear to carve them. An uncarved pair of eyes cannot look back, cannot question the carver, and cannot refuse the meaning he has given the image. To finish the eyes would be to let the beloved become a witness rather than a memory. Leaving with Sun is the first suggestion that he may finally allow someone living to look back.
