Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
For eighteen years Yang Kang knows himself as Wanyan Kang, son of a Jin prince. The palace, his tutors, his mother's care, and Wanyan Honglie's affection are not illusions to him. They are the only life he has inhabited.
The life was founded on a crime. Wanyan Honglie engineered violence against two families to obtain Bao Xiruo, then raised her child by Yang Tiexin as his own. Jin Yong refuses to make the emotional ledger simple. The prince is culpable for the original destruction, yet his tenderness toward Bao Xiruo and the boy is patient and genuine. He spends eighteen years living carefully with what he stole.
When the truth emerges, Yang Kang is told that his name, father, nationality, and duty are all different from what he believed. Everyone around him supplies the required response: acknowledge Yang Tiexin, abandon the prince's household, and become the Han patriot contained in the name “Kang.” The same people who reveal the truth demand an immediate verdict on what the truth must mean.
Yang Kang refuses. The novel does not excuse what follows—betrayal, violence, schemes for status, and finally death in the Iron Spear Temple before the image of his supposed ancestor Yang Zaixing. The surname he evades frames his end. But neither does the novel pretend that he was born craving treachery. His first eighteen years were arranged without his knowledge, and the correction arrives as an order to erase them overnight.
Guo Jing's childhood is equally arranged: exile in Mongolia, seven teachers, a national name, and an appointed rival. The difference appears when choice finally becomes possible. Guo relinquishes his Mongol command, marriage to Huazheng, prestige, and—through his mother's sacrifice—even the easiest path to saving her. Yang Kang cannot release the princely identity that has held him.
Truth creates the possibility of choice; it does not preselect the choice. Yang Kang's failure is his, but the burden placed upon that moment belongs to everyone who let the lie become his whole childhood.
