Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
Zhao Pan first appears as a troublesome boy in the streets of Handan: stealing, fighting, and running when the fight turns against him. His mother, Lady Ya, lives in a respectable house that does not feel like his home. He has no father present and no stable place in her affections.
Xiang Shaolong takes him as a student. He teaches him martial arts and steadies the broken relation with his mother. The warmth of these scenes matters because Zhao does not initially follow Xiang for power. He follows the first adult who consistently teaches, protects, corrects, and returns.
After Zhao Mu causes Lady Ya’s death, Xiang takes the boy toward Qin. There they discover that the real prince Ying Zheng has died in the chaos. Raymond Lam plays Zhao Pan and, after the substitution, Zhao Pan-as-Ying-Zheng—not the original prince, as the source draft had mistakenly stated.
The death leaves history with an empty name. Xiang needs that name occupied because his own return to 2001 depends on the First Emperor reaching the throne.
A bereaved boy of the right age stands beside him. Xiang asks Zhao Pan to impersonate Ying Zheng.
Zhao does not choose after understanding kingship, Qin politics, or a lifetime of concealment. His mother is dead, his cousin Princess Zhao Qian will also be lost, and the teacher before him is the one remaining person whose instructions still organize the world. He agrees from inside that dependence.
From then on, every greeting rehearses the substitution. Ministers kneel to “Ying Zheng.” Zhu Ji embraces him as her son. He must learn court history, taboos, kinship, and memory quickly enough that learning leaves no visible seam. A single failure can kill everyone who knows.
He also loses the simplest form of companionship: no new relationship can begin with his own name.
At first the assumed identity has a limited use. Zhao wants the power to avenge his mother. After Zhao Mu dies, he tells Xiang more than once that he does not want to remain king.
He eventually runs away. Xiang rebukes him and sends him back. Then Zhao is captured, unrecognized, and consigned to forced labor at the Great Wall. The nominal crown prince carries stone, is beaten, and nearly dies because outside the palace no one accepts the identity that imprisons him inside it.
The only person capable of recognizing Zhao Pan has already required him to be someone else.
When he returns, he no longer asks to leave. Before the Great Wall, he is a boy placed inside Ying Zheng’s name. After it, he decides to inhabit the name more completely than anyone has asked.
Raymond Lam marks the transformation by subtraction: the anxious glance toward his teacher disappears; speech slows; certainty settles into the face. Zhao eliminates rivals and threats one by one. He baits Lao Ai with the life of Lao Ai’s infant, kills the child before its parents, and drives Lao Ai and Zhu Ji to suicide. He reveals the substitution to Lü Buwei only when the revelation itself can kill hope, then orders poison.
None of these acts is the straightforward continuation of the street boy. Nor is the king merely a false identity pasted over him. A role first imposed becomes a discipline he takes over and intensifies.
The tragedy is not simply that Zhao Pan disappears. It is that when he once tried to preserve Zhao Pan by leaving, the person he loved most taught him that exit was not available. The next time he closes the door, he does it from the inside.
