Currahee

At Camp Toccoa, the volunteers of Easy Company run Currahee, a mountain whose name supplies their motto: three miles up, three miles down. Captain Herbert Sobel makes the training punishing. Weekend passes disappear over an unfastened button, dust on a rifle sight, or a can of peaches that should—or should not—be in a man’s kit. On a march he orders everyone to empty his canteen because one soldier drank at the wrong time.

Severity is not the essential problem. These men volunteered for airborne infantry and expect extreme standards. A severe standard can still be known: a time to beat, a formation to hold, a rifle to clean. Sobel’s standard exists inside Sobel. What passed yesterday may fail today. Compliance offers no security because the next violation can be invented after the inspection begins.

The arrangement teaches a precise skill. The men stop studying the work and start studying the man. They monitor his mood, anticipate his attention, and learn the weather of arbitrary authority. Sobel becomes indispensable because only Sobel knows what Sobel will count.

The map that does not care who commands

The weakness appears during field exercises. Sobel can define the inspection, but he cannot define the terrain. He gets lost, misreads maps, and leads the company into bad positions. A field has coordinates that do not change when a captain declares otherwise.

His authority is strongest where he controls the test and weakest where an external reality tests him. That reversal terrifies a leader whose standing depends on being beyond evaluation. He responds by shifting blame, but the noncommissioned officers have seen enough. They do not object merely to discomfort. They believe he will get them killed in combat.

When Sobel engineers a charge against Lieutenant Richard Winters, Winters refuses a summary punishment and requests trial by court-martial. The move carries the dispute beyond Sobel’s private jurisdiction. Winters is removed from the company while the matter proceeds.

The sergeants then make an extraordinary decision. They return their stripes. They do not declare that they will disobey orders. They say they cannot occupy positions of responsibility under this commander in combat. Some are demoted or transferred. They risk punishment because the judgment concerns a future battlefield rather than present comfort.

Authority that can survive a person

Sobel is reassigned to run a parachute training school—a place where his ability to enforce demanding standards can be useful without asking him to navigate a company under fire. Winters returns. Significantly, Winters had not organized the protest. He discourages personal loyalty from becoming a faction and understands the danger the sergeants assumed.

His own authority works differently. He runs Currahee with the men. He does not ask for exemptions, and the visible demand applies first to him. His discipline can be severe, but it is attached to the task rather than to the daily proof of his superiority.

Sobel requires everyone to watch Sobel. Winters directs attention toward the thing that must be done. The distinction matters because a company eventually has to act without its ideal commander. If judgment lives only in one person, absence produces paralysis. If standards have been made visible, others can carry them into situations the leader never anticipated.

The simplest test of authority is therefore not how forcefully it operates while the boss is present. It is what remains when that person leaves for two weeks. Do people know what to do, why it matters, and how to correct one another? Or have they learned only to read the mood of power? Toccoa trains bodies for war. It also reveals which kind of command can outlive the commander.

Band of Brothers was produced by HBO and premiered in 2001. The ten-part miniseries was adapted from Stephen E. Ambrose’s book and shaped by testimony from veterans of Easy Company.
