Edition note: An independent English essay on We. Full-book spoilers.
D-503 lives in a city made of glass. Apartments expose their occupants, streets offer no corner in which a body can disappear, and the Guardians need no dramatic search when daily life has already arranged itself for inspection.
The One State calls this openness rational. Nothing honest, the argument goes, should need to hide.
D-503 can see people in the building opposite and still know almost nothing about them. He sees movements, appointments, departures, and Pink Tickets. He does not see what a person is afraid to say, what she has not yet decided, or what a gesture means to her.
Visibility gives the state data without giving neighbors trust. Indeed, trust becomes unnecessary: conduct can be verified from above. A citizen no longer has to risk believing another person's account when an observer may simply check the wall.
The result is not a society without secrets. It is one in which secrecy belongs chiefly to the institutions doing the watching. Ordinary lives are transparent; the Guardians' files, methods, and decisions are not.
Everyone wakes, works, walks, and eats at the same prescribed moments. The schedule relieves D-503 of countless small decisions. It also makes any unscheduled hour look less like leisure than a crack in reality.
This is why I-330 unsettles him before he understands anything about her politics. She arrives late, changes a plan, drinks and smokes, then speaks as if a moment might be valuable before the state has named its function. Her freedom first appears not as a doctrine but as bad timing.
A common timetable can coordinate millions of lives. It becomes domination when coordination claims every minute, leaving no interval in which a person may discover a wish that was not listed in advance.
During authorized sexual visits, residents may lower curtains around their glass rooms. The One State has not concluded that intimacy needs a protected boundary. It has granted a temporary visual exemption after recording the visitor and the appointed hour.
That difference matters. A boundary one may draw for oneself lets closeness develop without an audience. A curtain issued by the same authority that watches simply changes surveillance into a switch: privacy exists when power says it may.
The glass city therefore does more than expose bodies. It teaches citizens to distrust any part of life that cannot be displayed on demand. Zamyatin's sharper question is not whether we have something shameful to hide. It is whether a thought, friendship, or love can become our own if it never has a room in which it is allowed to be unfinished.
