Natalie has become Iceweasel among the walkaways when her billionaire father takes her back by force. He surrounds her with experts and a story: she has been manipulated, and confinement is the treatment that will restore his daughter.
Every exit she demands becomes further evidence that she is not ready to leave.
Jacob may genuinely love Natalie. He also has money, surveillance, armed force, and medical authority able to turn his interpretation into her environment. Affection does not balance that asymmetry.
An adult can choose dangerous political work without losing the capacity to choose. If intervention is ever needed during an immediate crisis, it requires independent review, communication, a short limit, and a route back to freedom. A parent cannot be the complainant, judge, and keeper of the door.
Iceweasel need not prove her father never cared. She can remember care and still refuse contact. Love describes a history; it does not issue a continuing license over another person's body.
The uploaded Dis wakes with memories, recognizes friends, and responds to events that happened after the scan. Whether she is exactly the same person as the dead biological Dis cannot be settled by familiarity alone. What can be seen is a new center of experience continuing from a shared past.
When several instances run, each begins to acquire a different future. The existence of a backup does not make deletion trivial. Another copy cannot continue the exact conversation, fear, and change that ended here.
Default billionaires want to monopolize upload so wealth and control can outlive bodies. Walkaways can repeat the same ownership in public language if they assume digital people must work constantly, accept dangerous missions, or remain faithful replicas of the dead. Open code frees a life only when the life may refuse its original purpose.
The default world attacks settlements and kills walkaways, including Hubert. Digital versions preserve relationships and knowledge, while shared designs let destroyed buildings reappear elsewhere. The network is hard to conquer because it has no capital whose fall ends every road.
Resilience does not make deaths acceptable. The Hubert who endured capture has experiences an older backup cannot recover. A rebuilt B&B is not the same room with the same morning inside it.
The walkaways defend themselves by dispersing, interrupting attacks, rescuing people, and sometimes using force. Their restraint has meaning only if it remains tied to reopening choices, not installing their system as the next default. Iceweasel, Dis, and the rebuilt settlements share one political test: after protection, copying, or victory, can the person affected still walk away? If not, a new world has merely learned the old world's most comforting name for possession.
