Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Annalee Newitz's The Terraformers. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-book spoilers.
Destry and Spider City force Verdance into an agreement at enormous risk. Centuries later, property power returns through new firms, technologies, and contracts. The earlier victory did not fail: without it, a city might have died and later movements would lack its records, alliances, and example.
What fails is the expectation that one agreement can govern every future conflict. Institutions are used and reinterpreted by later actors. A founding achievement that cannot be questioned soon becomes a justification for present exclusion.
Managers die, but databases, titles, and corporate entities cross generations. People who never terraformed Sask-E inherit command, while generations of residents must repeatedly prove their right to remain. The past looks natural because the burden of evidence falls on the living.
Long-term justice must let use, care, and exposure to consequences accumulate into rights. Expiration dates, public review, and routes to community control can prevent ancient investment from becoming eternal government.
New beings also appear faster than old definitions can anticipate them. Early conflicts concern hominin species; later ones involve robots, animals, and sentient infrastructure. A future-facing constitution does not need to list every possible citizen. It needs a presumption of protection and a procedure through which unfamiliar lives can speak.
Resistance movements face the same danger. Emergency secrecy and coordination may save lives, but leaders must later relinquish special powers, record decisions, protect dissent, and let people leave. A campaign for multispecies governance should practice it internally.
Each era inherits paths, archives, cities, errors, and a larger vocabulary for recognition. Progress is not a straight line toward rules that never decay. It is an increase in who can intervene and how difficult it is to disguise harm as nature.
The novel’s immense timescale refuses the comfort of final victory. Hope rests elsewhere: every generation receives more than silence and can revise the world without asking the original owner for permission to begin.

The Terraformers
