By the time Mandella reaches the end of the war, humanity is no longer made up in the way he remembers. A collective of genetically identical humans calls itself Man, while the Taurans have also become a clone species capable of direct communication.
Only then can the two sides understand that the conflict began without the clear hostile intention generations had been sent to avenge.
Relativistic travel makes every battlefield late. Soldiers act on orders and assumptions formed decades or centuries elsewhere; by the time evidence returns, the governments and people who began an operation may no longer exist.
Automation bridges the delay, but also preserves it. Weapons and procedures can execute a purpose long after anyone is able to restate, challenge, or withdraw that purpose. The war acquires continuity greater than either population's understanding.
Misunderstanding does not make the dead unreal. It makes the institutions more accountable, not less: when communication is uncertain and correction slow, confidence should shrink. Instead, the machinery converted uncertainty into an enemy that justified more machinery.
Man is not portrayed simply as a monster. The collective has ended many divisions, survived, and finally found a way to communicate with the Taurans. It also recognizes that Mandella and other unchanged humans may not wish to enter it.
Middle Finger offers them a place to live as individuals and to have children. The arrangement is imperfect and historical, but its importance lies in refusing to make the latest form of humanity compulsory merely because it is latest.
Mandella does not need to defeat the future or declare his older form superior. Peace becomes believable when a civilization secure enough to end war also leaves a door open for lives it no longer takes as the norm.
Separated on different missions, Marygay cannot know when Mandella will return. She uses relativistic travel to cross enormous stretches of calendar time and leaves information telling him where she will wait.
The message does not demand that he remain unchanged or treat their past as a debt. It keeps one possible meeting from being erased by military schedules. Mandella still has to arrive, read it, and choose the life that follows.
They reunite on Middle Finger and eventually have a child. The ending is deliberately modest beside centuries of combat. Victory is not one species absorbing another, nor a veteran finally explaining history. It is time returned to people who can now make promises in years they may actually live together. After a war built by institutions that kept acting beyond anyone's answer, peace begins with a message that waits without commanding.

“中指星”给他们保留作为个体生活和生育的地方。安排当然带着历史局限，重要的是它没有因为最新形态已经出现，就强迫所有人都成为最新形态。
曼德拉不必击败未来，也不必宣布旧人类更优越。一个文明若足够稳定，既能结束战争，也能给不再被视作标准的生命留门，和平才开始可信。
两人被派往不同任务以后，玛丽盖伊不知道曼德拉何时回来。她利用相对论航行穿过漫长日历时间，并留下消息，告诉他自己会在哪里等待。
