Edition note: An independent English essay on Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed. Full-book spoilers.
After the soldiers fire into the demonstration in Nio Esseia, Shevek reaches the Terran embassy injured, hunted, and almost empty-handed. The Ioti government has fed him, housed him, surrounded him with physicists, and waited for the equations it believes all this has purchased. He has finally completed the theory.
Now he must decide what giving it away means.
Shevek's work has never been his alone. The questions began in childhood on Anarres. Odonian physics gave him one tradition; Urrasti physicists gave him another. Sabul translated texts, even while controlling them. Takver kept open the life in which thought could continue. Friends argued, workers fed laboratories, and scholars on both worlds supplied the language against which his own ideas took shape.
None of this makes Shevek a replaceable pipe through which society pours a result. He is the person who has spent years deciding which insights belong together, which proof is honest, which use of the work he can accept. A collective history enters the theory; responsibility for this act of giving still arrives in one pair of hands.
That distinction matters because Sabul and the Ioti state make opposite versions of the same claim. Sabul says knowledge belongs to the community, then uses that principle to control its circulation. A-Io says its university supplied the resources, so the finished theory should be delivered to the nation. In both cases, contribution expands into a right to decide everything.
Shevek can give the theory only because he first refuses to be given with it.
The physics at the center of the novel joins sequence and simultaneity: time as the road on which one event follows another, and time as a whole whose relations cannot be reduced to a single forward march. Le Guin builds the novel in the same tension. One set of chapters moves from Shevek's arrival on Urras toward the embassy. The other begins in childhood and moves toward the departure we have already seen.
For most of the book, cause arrives after consequence. We know Shevek has crossed the wall before we know the years that made crossing necessary. We watch Urras welcome him before we understand exactly what it wants. The two lines finally meet, but neither erases the other. Departure remains a choice made in sequence; viewed from the end, it also belongs to the shape of a return.
This is more than formal elegance. Shevek's political problem has the same form. A society is inherited as a whole—its language, labor, memories, and promises—yet each person meets it in moments where another action remains possible. If the whole decides everything, choice becomes illusion. If only the present matters, no promise or history can be carried forward.
The theory that may permit instantaneous communication grows from a life spent trying to hold both truths at once.
At the embassy, Terran ambassador Keng tells Shevek about Earth. Her world once possessed abundance like Urras and consumed it until little remained. From the history she carries, Urras—with its green fields, animals, and rain—looks almost like paradise. To Shevek, fresh from the massacre and the servants' corridors, the word is unbearable.
Neither view is false. Keng sees a living planet from the memory of ruin; Shevek sees the ownership of that life from below its ceremonial surface. Their conversation prevents him from replacing Urras with one final description. A world can be beautiful and murderous, abundant and unavailable. The position from which someone speaks is not noise to be removed from judgment. It is part of what the judgment knows.
Shevek asks Keng to transmit his General Temporal Theory to every known world. Not to Earth alone, not to Anarres, not to the Ioti state, and not to the movement whose dead he has just witnessed. The future ansible will not end conflict or prevent technical abuse. Public knowledge is not innocence. What simultaneous transmission prevents is the first and most decisive enclosure: one power turning every other world into a client waiting outside a locked archive.
The gift does not say that the theory came from nowhere. It says that no contribution entitles a nation to own its future.
Shevek returns on a Hainish ship without knowing whether the people at the Anarresti port will welcome him or finish what the stone began. He has no government guarantee, because Anarres has no government. The theory is already beyond recall. What remains is the body that has to cross the wall again.
Ketho, a Hainish crewman, asks to come with him. He wants to see Anarres, and no visitor from the wider community of worlds has yet been admitted into its life. Shevek cannot promise safety. He cannot invite Ketho in the name of an entire planet. He can only agree to arrive beside him and take responsibility for the first encounter.
The choice reverses the opening without completing it. One Anarresti left alone; an Anarresti and a stranger now approach together. The wall is still there. The crowd may still be there. Openness is not a proclamation that every arrival is harmless. It is the refusal to let uncertainty decide the future before anyone has met.
The novel ends before the hatch opens. Le Guin withholds the successful landing for the same reason she withholds a finished utopia: the next relation cannot be written in advance without ceasing to be a relation. Shevek has sent time outward to every world. He comes home with no possession except the consequences of what he has done—and beside him, another person whose first step Anarres has not yet answered.
