Edition note: An independent English essay on Seven Surrenders. Full-book spoilers.

The peace of Seven Surrenders has a hidden casualty list. For generations, a small circle has killed people judged likely to push the world toward war.

The scheme is not random cruelty. It is calm administration carried out by people who believe the absence of great wars proves their calculation worked.

A successful prediction cannot hear the future it prevented

The victims were selected by influence, position, and modeled consequence. Once killed, they can never show whether they would have changed, failed, or used their power in an unexpected direction.

That makes the system impossible to falsify. Continued peace confirms the murders; instability after disclosure can also be blamed on ending them. The dead supply no counterexample because the plan erased it.

Even if some killings prevented conflict, the result does not create public authority after the fact. No community debated the acceptable risk, no court tested the evidence, and no target could challenge the sentence.

Secrecy takes political judgment away from everyone else

Citizens believed peace came from chosen Hives, shared transport, and a culture that had outgrown war. They were never allowed to decide whether peace purchased through invisible execution was the peace they wanted.

The deception also weakened the practices that might have sustained peace openly: mediation, visible compromise, arms limits, and habits of living with people one cannot remove.

When truth emerges, public shock is not evidence that ordinary people were too immature to know. It shows how long leaders postponed building a politics able to carry morally difficult knowledge.

Disclosure owes the living more than an explosion

The truth must be released. Continued concealment would no longer protect peace in general; it would protect the particular people whose authority depends on the lie.

But simply dropping every secret into a frightened world can force ordinary people to absorb consequences chosen by elites on both sides. Records, independent investigators, protection for witnesses, and clear separation between fact and rumor are part of telling the truth responsibly.

War is not a natural chemical reaction to disclosure. Leaders, armies, and citizens still choose how to answer. The names removed from history cannot be restored to life, but restoring them to public memory can prevent the next peace from treating unseen death as its most efficient institution.

《Seven Surrenders》
