Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Sue Burke's Semiosis. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-book spoilers.
A fruit is not automatically a sentence. On Pax, however, plants change nutrition, toxins, scent, and growth after animals and humans respond. Patterns recur and adapt across exchanges. What seemed a fixed property begins to look like invitation, warning, reward, or control.
Recognition starts by allowing that communication may exist outside sound and grammar. If expression counts only when it resembles human expression, an unfamiliar intelligence is excluded before evidence can appear.
The corrective can go too far. Once settlers recognize strategy, they may attribute love, jealousy, honor, or other familiar motives to every branch. Stevland, the rainbow bamboo, has memory and planning, but a distributed body, reproduction, and timescale unlike a human’s. Its word “cooperation” may not carry the promise people hear in friendship.
Interpretation should stay tied to repeatable interaction while remaining open to revision. That is not cold skepticism; it is a refusal to replace one form of erasure with a flattering human costume.
Naming Stevland makes promises and discussion possible. The name turns a complex organism into a recognizable partner for human institutions. It may also hide how the bamboo experiences its many stems or whether it understands itself as a single “I.” A name can be a bridge without becoming ownership of the being it names.
Humans never enter Stevland’s experience directly, and it infers humanity through food, movement, work, and conflict. Each side can misread or manipulate. Complete understanding cannot be a prerequisite for contact, while ongoing contact cannot be proof that understanding is complete.
Small experiments, observed consequences, and revocable agreements let a relationship survive uncertainty. The scientist is also part of the experiment: sampling, cutting, and approaching become signs through which the plant interprets people. Meaning belongs to neither sender alone. The planet is not a message addressed exclusively to humanity; it is a conversation that changes every participant who tries to read it.
