Arthur Burbridge walks ahead because Redrick needs a body to trigger the trap.

The young man is full of plans. He believes they are going to the Golden Sphere together and talks about the happiness he will ask for. Then the meat grinder takes him. Redrick has arranged the route so that Arthur's death will open it.

The Zone turns companionship into equipment

Arthur is the son of Vulture Burbridge, an older stalker who has used and betrayed others. Redrick can tell himself the family has incurred a debt. The Zone offers a harsher logic: none of that matters. A living body is needed at this point on the path, and Arthur is available.

Redrick has often been used by institutes, buyers, and men with cleaner hands. At the final crossing he reproduces the same relation in its simplest form. Another person's future becomes a tool for reaching his own.

The novel does not let Arthur's optimism make him wise. It makes him particular. His naïveté, vanity, and borrowed ideals are precisely the life the plan removes.

At the Sphere, Redrick cannot locate a pure wish

He came for Monkey. He also wants money, safety, revenge, relief from guilt, and an end to the Zone's hold. Standing before the Sphere, Redrick searches for something inside himself that has not been planted by greed, fear, other people's slogans, or the violence required to arrive.

The problem is not that influence makes every wish false. No one invents a moral language alone. The problem is that Redrick has spent so long adapting to structures that use lives as means that he no longer trusts the voice with which he might ask for anything else.

Arthur's last words return because they are available when Redrick's own vocabulary fails.

“Happiness for everybody” remains a prayer, not a solution

Redrick ends by pleading for happiness, free, with no one left behind. The wish is radically wider than the selfish purpose that brought him there. It is also spoken beside the place where he knowingly left someone behind.

That contradiction gives the ending its force. A universal sentence does not reimburse Arthur or guarantee that the Sphere interprets human words as humans do. It may grant nothing. It may grant the hidden desire beneath the phrase. It may be another artifact onto which people project intention.

The novel stops before an answer because the decisive event has already happened. Redrick, who survived by narrowing concern to the next step, finally finds a sentence in which nobody is material. He has not earned it cleanly. Perhaps no one reaches such a sentence cleanly. The question is whether a wish born after irreparable harm can become the beginning of another way of living, rather than the final decoration placed over the boy on the path.
