On the way out of the Zone, Kirill seems to brush an almost invisible silvery web. They return safely, carrying an artifact called a full empty.
Later Redrick sees something like a cobweb on Kirill's shoulder and brushes it away. Kirill goes home and dies of heart failure before morning. No one can prove the thread killed him.
Aliens came to Earth and left six Visitation Zones behind. Humanity received no message, treaty, or account of purpose. The artifacts may be tools, trash, or side effects. Scientists cannot even know whether the visitors noticed the species living nearby.
The novel's “roadside picnic” image makes the insult vivid. After travelers stop for lunch, animals investigate spilled oil, batteries, wrappers, and coins. The animals may build entire theories of the event while remaining absent from the travelers' concern.
Contact has occurred physically without becoming a meeting. Human beings are changed by another intelligence that never turns toward them as an audience.
Zone artifacts acquire names from use and appearance: full empties, batteries, black sprays. Naming allows researchers to compare results and stalkers to sell objects. It is indispensable practical knowledge.
It also gives uncertainty a handle that can feel like possession. “Full empty” tells people how two metal disks behave while revealing almost nothing about what they were for. The object enters laboratories, markets, and military plans long before its place in the visitors' world becomes intelligible.
Science in the novel is not mocked for failing to know everything. Its dignity lies in keeping the gap visible: a repeatable effect is real, and a human explanation of that effect is still partial.
Redrick had guided the route. Kirill had wanted the artifact. The institute had authorized the trip. An invisible phenomenon may have attached itself to a shoulder, and a hand may have completed the sequence. Responsibility cannot be placed neatly on one actor because no one understood the event well enough to choose it whole.
Redrick nevertheless carries the death. Uncertainty does not feel like innocence when he remembers seeing the web. The Zone turns knowledge into an ethical burden: every useful observation may arrive one step after the moment when it could have protected someone.
The aliens leave no answer, but Kirill's absence is an answer of another kind. Whatever the artifacts were to their makers, they now enter human lives through bodies, friendships, and blame. Meaning begins not when the visitors explain themselves, but when those left beside the picnic must decide how to live with what remains.
