By the final war, there are two people whom history can call Jedao. Cheris carries the adult general's memories and has used his identity; Kujen's young commander carries his body, early life, and dangerous ability.
Neither is the original restored. Each is real enough to frustrate anyone who wants the name to have one owner.
Cheris has military reasons to stop Kujen's commander and at one point tries to kill him. He controls enormous force and may repeat a catastrophe whether or not he remembers the old one.
Yet removal would also simplify a difficult inheritance. If only Cheris remains, she no longer has to share the public meaning of Jedao with a person who may choose differently.
Their encounter raises the burden of lethal action. The young Jedao is no longer a node on Kujen's map; Cheris is no longer the enemy described by his caretaker. Evidence passes between them, and the possibility of leaving Kujen becomes something more concrete than a demand to trust a new authority.
Cheris knows parts of the adult Jedao that the young version cannot remember. That knowledge does not let her announce his true destiny. She can show what Kujen concealed without requiring him to inherit the adult man's hatred, mission, or guilt.
The young Jedao does not need to defeat Cheris to prove his continuity. His later choice to surrender rather than seize a fleet is a departure from both Kujen's design and the legend that says a Jedao must answer uncertainty with superior command.
Both heirs owe history a response, but not the same response. Cheris can explain memories and decisions she carries. The young Jedao can accept limits attached to his present force. Neither must become a perfect container for the dead.
Kujen is defeated, but his death does not return occupied bodies, repair calendrical torture, or teach institutions to share their secrets. The Compact, General Inesser's Protectorate, machine communities, and local societies remain distinct centers.
Young Jedao surrenders to Inesser. That act stops military power without declaring his person forfeit. For surrender to support peace, it must lead to evidence, review, and a possible life—not another black cradle in which a useful enemy is stored forever.
The trilogy ends without a benevolent successor owning everyone else's time. Its peace is slower and untidier: alliances can be limited, ships can refuse, and yesterday's ally can argue without becoming today's heretic. Two Jedaos do not merge, and several governments do not become one. The future remains open because nobody wins the right to finish it alone.

年轻杰道也不必打败切莉丝，才能证明自己连续存在。他后来选择投降而非夺取舰队，正同时偏离库珍设计与那则传奇：杰道遇到不确定时，理应总用更高明指挥回答。
两名继承者都需要回应历史，却不必给出相同回应。切莉丝能够解释自己携带的记忆与决定，年轻杰道则要接受当前军力所要求的限制。没有谁必须成为死者的完美容器。
库珍被击败，他的死却不会归还被占用的身体，修复历法酷刑，或教机构分享秘密。协约体、伊奈瑟将军的保护国、机器社群与地方社会仍然是不同中心。
年轻杰道向伊奈瑟投降。这个动作停止军事权力，却没有宣布他的人格可以被没收。投降若要支持和平，就必须通向证据、审查与仍然可能的生活，而不是另一座永远储存有用敌人的黑色摇篮。
