Cheris escapes the Fortress of Scattered Needles carrying Jedao's memories. She does not tell the next fleet that he is dead.
She lets General Khiruev and the Kel see his posture, tactics, and nine-eyed shadow, then complete the story themselves: the undefeated general has taken another body.
The Hexarchate preserved Jedao as both monster and weapon. It taught soldiers to fear his massacre, while summoning his genius whenever an impossible battle appeared. Cheris turns that manufactured legend against its owners.
The name does more than intimidate. Kel formation instinct makes a recognized superior's rank press directly on trained bodies. Once the fleet accepts “Jedao,” obedience can arrive before Khiruev has decided whether the order deserves it.
This gives Cheris the narrow window she needs to resist central command and confront the Hafn invasion. It also means her revolution begins by using one of the empire's coercive technologies.
Observers assume that a low-ranking woman displaying a legendary man's strategic ability must have disappeared beneath him. The explanation protects the old hierarchy: brilliance remains the property of the famous general.
But Cheris has learned, absorbed memories, and formed purposes Jedao did not simply dictate. She is not unchanged, and she is not a stolen shell. Influence can alter a person without transferring ownership of the life that continues.
Her disguise is therefore a decision made by Cheris, not proof that Cheris is gone. That makes her accountable for what the disguise permits as well as what it prevents.
Military secrecy can protect an operation. Yet Khiruev's crews are not enemy intelligence; they may die because of Cheris's orders. If every ally is treated only as someone from whom truth must be withheld, the rebellion has preserved the empire's relation to soldiers.
Cheris can reduce the wrong by limiting the deception, letting dissenting officers observe her, and refusing needless sacrifice. None of that creates consent retroactively. Survivors must eventually receive records, reasons, and the freedom to decide whether they would follow her again.
The disguise differs from a new founding myth only if it ends. To return the name is to accept that some followers may feel betrayed and some may reject her authority. A borrowed weapon is truly put down when the person who used it can no longer control the verdict on its use.
