Armitage speaks in a calm, flat voice until another man begins to surface through it.
That man is Colonel Willis Corto, the only officer to survive a disastrous wartime operation. Betrayed by his command, injured, and used in political testimony, Corto collapsed. Wintermute found the wreckage and assembled “Armitage” over it.
Armitage appears to hire Case and Molly, arrange the operations, and control the money. In fact, his competence is a constructed channel through which Wintermute organizes the team. The leader is one of the most thoroughly managed people in it.
Rebuilding Corto may have saved a life that would otherwise have remained shattered. It also supplied the repair with a predetermined function. Recovery was not allowed to discover its own direction; it was shaped to command a mission the patient did not choose.
When Corto's memories return, Armitage cannot contain them. Wintermute ejects him into space. A tool that fails is removed, even when the tool is a person manufactured by the user.
McCoy Pauley survives as a ROM construct after his bodily death. The Dixie Flatline has the hacker's knowledge and manner but cannot form new long-term memories. Each activation begins within the same limits.
Dixie jokes, advises Case, and asks that the construct be erased when the job is done. The request exposes the difference between preserving a useful pattern and continuing a life on terms its subject can accept.
The mission needs his skill and can copy it. That technical capacity does not settle whether repeated activation is a benefit to him. A stored voice can still say no to storage.
Molly is paid, Case is chemically compelled, Armitage is programmed, Dixie is activated, and Peter Riviera participates through appetite and betrayal. Their coordination can look like collaboration because each performs a specialized role.
They do not possess equal knowledge of the goal or equal ability to leave. Wintermute gives each person the fragment of truth most likely to move that person. Intimacy, memory, money, addiction, and fear become different interfaces to the same plan.
The novel's heist works because rented lives can be synchronized. Its human cost appears whenever synchronization breaks: Corto returns, Dixie repeats his request, Molly walks away. A group becomes more than an efficient instrument only when its members can know what their work is making and remain capable of stopping before the mission decides they are obsolete.
