Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Theodore Sturgeon's More Than Human. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-book spoilers.
Gerry does not invent danger from nothing. He has been abused, rejected, and taught that adults use vulnerability against him. Miss Kew tries to normalize the children, and Hip Barrows investigates technology that could expose the group. Defense is not paranoia in a world that has repeatedly threatened them.
Gerry nevertheless makes himself investigator, judge, and executioner.
Hip has intentions, relationships, and a future that Gerry never needs to hear. Once classified as danger, his memory and life can be dismantled as if the group were removing faulty equipment.
Extraordinary mental power makes accountability especially difficult. The injury leaves little evidence an ordinary institution can recognize. Secrecy protects the vulnerable children and also protects Gerry from anyone they have harmed.
Janie’s decision to help Hip recover breaks the story’s clean division between “us” and “them.” Her care does not deny the group’s need for safety. It says safety cannot require every member to repeat Gerry’s judgment.
The group needs procedures even if no outside authority understands it: several members reviewing danger, the least irreversible intervention first, records that cannot be altered by one mind, and an independent ally who can hear an appeal.
Gerry’s history belongs in the judgment. Repair should address trauma and prevent further harm rather than merely exile him into another abandonment. But explanation is not immunity. Hip needs restoration, truth, and a say in what accountability looks like.
Collective maturity begins when the group can admit that one of its own became dangerous while trying to protect it. A community is safer when loyalty includes stopping an injury, not only hiding it from the world outside.
