Edition note: An independent English essay on Lord of Light. Full-book spoilers.
A person dies and may return in another body. The technology aboard the old colony ship can preserve memory, change sex, escape disease, and let knowledge outlive one set of organs.
On this planet, rebirth passes through Heaven. The people who run the machinery call their decision karma.
The first colonists control mind transfer, cloned bodies, and the education needed to operate them. Ordinary residents are assessed for loyalty and religious conduct before receiving another life—or a body chosen to express punishment.
The system does more than ration a scarce resource. It explains its own result as cosmic desert. A weak body proves the recipient deserved weakness; protest proves further spiritual failure.
When the allocator also writes the moral meaning of allocation, no experience can correct the rule. Rebirth stops enlarging life and becomes a wage paid for submission.
Brahma, Kali, Yama, and their peers move through bodies while preserving technical knowledge, alliances, and old rivalries. Others may lose memory and social position between incarnations.
Longevity therefore compounds like wealth. The gods appear wise partly because they have prevented anyone else from building an equally continuous life. Their past decisions become tradition before a new generation can gather evidence against them.
Long experience can be valuable without entitling one mind to hold office for centuries. A public technology would need open education, records, rotating authority, and rules that separate personal lifespan from the lifespan of political control.
Mind transfer loosens the tie between identity and one body. For some, that opens gender, health, and forms of life previously unavailable. For others, a familiar body and the option to end are themselves meaningful.
Universal access cannot mean universal compulsion. People need information about continuity and memory, a say in the body they receive, and the ability to refuse another incarnation without being declared irrational.
Sam's demand to open the machinery does not solve every problem of population, bodies, and responsibility. It restores those questions to the people who must live them. The technology becomes liberating when Heaven can no longer use a promised next life to own the present one.
