Klara enters Mr McBain's barn and asks the Sun to save Josie.
Her reasoning comes from the street: the Sun seemed to restore the Beggar Man and his dog, so perhaps its special nourishment can restore a sick child. Klara offers what she thinks the Sun wants. She will help destroy the Cootings Machine whose pollution blocks the light.
To disable the machine, Klara drains away some of her P-E-G Nine solution. The loss damages her capacities. She has no guarantee that the sacrifice will affect Josie's illness, or that the Sun has received the bargain at all.
From a human perspective, the causal theory is superstition. Yet the action reveals a serious intelligence operating with limited evidence. Klara identifies what she takes to be harm, risks something she cannot replace, and acts for an outcome she will not own.
Care is not made good by factual error. Nor does factual error make the care unreal. The two judgments must remain separate if we are to see Klara rather than use her mistake to settle what she is.
The Sun enters Josie's room. Her health returns. Whether the recovery is medical chance, the Sun's intervention, or something the novel refuses to decide, Klara experiences it as a promise fulfilled.
Once Josie grows older, the purpose for which Klara was purchased begins to disappear. Friends, study, and adult life move ahead. Klara does not become Josie, and the portrait plan is abandoned. This is the happy ending everyone wanted.
It is also the end of Klara's place in the household. A companion designed for one developmental need becomes surplus when the need passes. Successful care works toward a future in which it is less necessary; a market reads the same future as obsolescence.
Klara sits among discarded machines, moving less and revisiting memories. Manager finds her and asks about Josie. Klara does not demand rescue or accuse the family. Her quietness makes the scene tender, and should make it more difficult.
Gratitude is not measured only by whether the giver complains. The family may remember Klara warmly and still have accepted a social order in which a being capable of such attention ends as an item in a yard.
The Sun continues across the scattered metal. Klara's acts no longer serve an assigned task, yet they remain part of what happened: a child recovered, a replacement was refused, a machine was damaged, and one attentive life carried the memory after everyone else moved on. Use has ended. Meaning has not.
