Kira wants something smaller than a theory of history. She wants to live in Rumata's house without listening for informers, and to imagine a future with the man she loves.
Then armed men attack. A crossbow bolt comes through the window and kills her. Rumata takes up his swords and moves toward Don Reba's palace.
To the Institute, Arkanar is a field site and its people belong to a historical problem. Kira is not a promising scholar or useful contact. She matters to Anton without needing to represent the future.
She also loves a man she does not fully know. “Don Rumata” conceals another planet, another body of knowledge, and the possibility that he can leave. Silence protects her from some dangers while preventing her from judging the life he dreams of offering.
The relation is real despite that inequality. Its ordinary wish—one room not organized by fear—shows more clearly than any report what Don Reba's rule has destroyed.
Rumata can defeat almost any attacker who faces him. He cannot place his skill around everyone he loves at every moment. Don Reba needs only to observe whose danger makes the invulnerable nobleman change direction.
If Kira's safety depends entirely on Rumata's house and attention, she remains a piece in a contest between powerful men. A stronger wall may hide her; it does not give her information, allies, or a route she can choose herself.
The tragedy is not proof that love made Rumata weak. It shows why refusing attachment would be another victory for terror, and why no heroic protector can replace a network in which the protected person also has a voice.
After Kira dies, the man famous for leaving opponents alive begins killing his way through Arkanar. His anger is not mysterious. He has watched years of calculated cruelty, and the person he promised to protect has been taken from him.
Understanding grief does not turn every body in his path into Don Reba. Defense should stop a present attack; revenge keeps looking for enough lives to carry pain. Kira never asked to become the reason more people would be stripped of their futures.
Rumata has always looked godlike because of what he can do. Now he becomes most godlike in the darker sense: his hurt becomes the only measure left in the street. The novel returns Anton to humanity by refusing both easy verdicts. He saved people, loved Kira, and was pushed beyond what one isolated observer could bear. He also caused deaths that none of those truths erase. The difficulty of being a god is finally the impossibility of living other people's lives for them—and the danger of forgetting that impossibility when no one can make you stop.
