The Second Body on the Table

Edition note: An independent English essay on Frankenstein. Full-book spoilers.

On a remote island, Victor looks at the unfinished female body and tears it apart while the creature watches through the window.

He had promised to make a companion in exchange for the pair leaving human society. Now he imagines that she may reject the agreement, refuse the first creature, reproduce, or become more violent than he is. Her possible freedom appears to him only as risk.

The request identifies a real deprivation

The creature asks for someone who will not recoil from his appearance and can share a life beyond human settlements. He is not wrong that companionship is a condition of flourishing, or that Victor helped make ordinary companionship almost unreachable.

But no deprivation gives one person title to another. A newly created woman could not be born already owing love, exile, or sexual partnership. If she is truly alive, she must be able to refuse the role for which she was made.

The proposed compensation therefore repeats the original mistake. Victor and the creature negotiate over a third life as though her future were property that could settle their account.

Victor destroys the body for reasons that reveal him

The unfinished being has not awakened. Destroying the body is not identical to murdering the conscious creature at the window. Victor is entitled to stop an experiment whose consequences he no longer accepts.

Yet he does not stop through a public reckoning or a plan for the life already created. He acts alone, driven by fantasies of control, and makes the destruction a spectacle for the creature. The gesture says again: I alone decide which lives may begin and which relations count.

Afterward, the creature vows to be with Victor on his wedding night. Both now use people outside their conflict as messages to the other.

The Arctic offers one last interruption

The creature kills Clerval and Elizabeth; Victor turns revenge into the only purpose keeping him alive. Their pursuit reaches Walton's ship, where another ambitious man has placed a crew in danger for discovery.

Walton finally turns back when the sailors ask to return home. The decision does not make him less daring. It shows ambition meeting other people's right not to be spent by it—the limit Victor repeatedly refused.

After Victor dies, the creature mourns beside the body and announces his own death. Walton cannot verify what happens after the figure disappears onto the ice. The open ending withholds the ownership both men wanted. Creator and creation have destroyed nearly every relation between them; the last witness can only watch the remaining life move beyond the story, carrying guilt that no final act can make clean.
