Algernon dies. Charlie buries him in the backyard and places flowers on the grave.
Then the losses Charlie predicted begin arriving in himself. Books close. Languages disappear. The progress reports contract and the spelling returns toward where it began. Readers are asked to experience decline not as one dramatic fall but as one sentence after another becoming harder to hold.
Charlie can recognize a fact one day and fail to retrieve it later. He sometimes knows he has forgotten without knowing what is gone. The brilliant researcher and the bakery worker are not two occupants who exchange a body; they are moments in one continuous, wounded life.
That continuity does not mean every ability is unimportant. Charlie is right to grieve what he loses. Respecting a person does not require pretending loss is merely social prejudice.
It requires refusing the additional claim that diminished performance diminishes the person's standing. Tragedy lies in losing capacities he valued, not in becoming the kind of being whose life no longer matters.
Alice stays as long as Charlie can bear her nearness. At the bakery, a new worker mocks him and Frank and Joe intervene. Their defense cannot cancel the old cruelty. It shows that people who once failed him are not frozen in the role of villains.
Charlie too has wounded others during his ascent. Greater intelligence gave him new perception and new ways to dominate a room. Regression does not erase that history any more than earlier disability erased the humiliation done to him.
Relations continue by carrying several versions of a person without letting the most impressive or most injured version own all the rest.
Charlie decides to leave New York because he does not want everyone watching what happens. The choice contains shame, agency, care for others, and a need to begin somewhere without comparison. No single label exhausts it.
His last report asks someone to put flowers on Algernon's grave. The request is small enough to survive the theories, papers, and arguments surrounding the experiment. It does not ask to preserve Charlie at his intellectual peak. It asks one person to remember a relation between two subjects who ran the maze.
Flowers will not repair the experiment or restore the dead mouse. Their value is that no performance earns them. They mark a life after usefulness, a memory after data, and the promise that when the ability to tell one's own story weakens, someone else may hold the story without claiming to own it.
