Edition note: An independent English essay on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Full-book spoilers.
By the time Rick walks into the empty land beyond the city, nearly every proof he relied on has broken.
He has killed six androids. His real goat is dead. The empathy test distinguished bodies without telling him what to do with the lives inside them. Even Mercer—the old man whom millions meet through an empathy box—has been exposed on television as an actor walking across a studio set.
Then something moves in the dust.
Buster Friendly's revelation is thorough. The landscape of Mercerism is staged, the ascent filmed, the suffering performed by a man named Al Jarry. For a culture that treats shared contact with Mercer as proof of human empathy, the discovery should be fatal.
Yet fraud at the level of production does not make every participant's experience unreal. People have felt one another's exhaustion through the boxes. They have entered grief they did not privately own. A manufactured image became the site of real relation.
This does not excuse deception. It separates two questions that the world of the novel desperately wants to keep together: Was the object authentic? What happened among people through it? The first answer can be false while the second remains consequential.
In the desert, Rick discovers a toad, an animal believed extinct. He lifts it from the dust with the reverence of someone receiving a world back. After the goat, the killings, and the collapse of Mercer, this small life seems like an undeserved answer.
Iran examines it at home and finds the control panel. The toad is electric. She tells Rick, and the news wounds him because no substitute is allowed to count fully in a culture built around rarity.
But Iran does not throw it away. She orders artificial flies and prepares to care for it. Her act is not based on confusion; she knows exactly what the toad is. Once the promise of prestige and miracle disappears, an ordinary question remains: what kind of attention will they give the thing now in their keeping?
An electric animal does not suffer hunger as an organic toad does. Caring for it cannot be morally identical to rescuing an endangered creature. Dick leaves that difference intact.
Still, the decision matters because Iran refuses to let exposure settle the whole value of relation. The toad is not alive in the hoped-for sense, but the habits formed around tending it—notice, patience, responsibility for fragility—are actions in the human world. Counterfeit nature can reveal genuine care just as a staged Mercer can carry genuine grief.
The novel ends far from a clean answer to its title. Perhaps androids dream; perhaps some do not. Humans may pass the test and behave cruelly. What survives the confusion is not a perfect detector but a practice: look again after the label arrives.
Iran's order for flies is almost comic in its smallness. That is why it works as an ending. After every institution has tried to decide which beings count, one person chooses not to let disappointment have the final action. The toad is electric. It will still be looked after.
