Edition note: An independent English essay on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Full-book spoilers.
Rick Deckard carries a briefcase that can make a face betray itself.
The Voigt-Kampff apparatus records tiny bodily responses while he asks questions about boiled lobster, calfskin wallets, and animals left to suffer. A hesitation becomes a reading; the reading becomes a verdict. If the subject is a Nexus-6 android, Rick may “retire” it.
The word performs useful work. Machines retire. People are killed.
At the Rosen Association, Rachael answers with the poise of a young woman raised among wealth and protected animals. The test does not immediately settle what she is. For a moment, the instrument designed to produce certainty makes Rick uncertain about the instrument.
Rachael has memories of childhood. They feel like hers because there is no inner label marking them artificial. When she learns they belong to someone else, the discovery does not expose an empty mechanism; it wounds the person who had organized a life around them.
None of this proves that android and human are identical. It shows that origin cannot finish the encounter. Once a being can be deceived about her own past, fear discovery, negotiate, and suffer what a revelation does to her future, “manufactured” no longer tells us how every act toward her should count.
Luba sings opera and, before her death, stands in a museum looking at Munch. Rick has come to identify a target. The scene gives him a woman with taste, professional discipline, evasions, and a wish to keep living. Phil Resch shoots her after buying her a book of the artist's work.
Resch passes the empathy test. That fact should restore the boundary: the cold killer is human; the singer he kills is not. Instead it makes the boundary harder to use. A test can classify the biological or manufactured response it was designed to measure. It cannot guarantee that the certified human will act humanely.
Rick's distress after Luba dies is not a technical malfunction. He has seen too much particularity to make the category close cleanly again.
After the day's bounties, Rick buys a real goat. In his world, caring for an animal is devotion, status, and proof that one participates in the shared religion of empathy. The purchase feels like a return to life after professional killing.
Rachael later pushes the goat from the roof. The act is cruel and personal. It prevents an easy reversal in which every android becomes morally purer than every human. Rachael can be wronged without becoming harmless; Rick can feel empathy while continuing to kill for a living.
Dick keeps both facts in the room. The point is not to replace one reliable species label with another. It is to notice how eagerly labels do our judging for us. “Retirement” allowed Rick to pull a trigger before meeting the life at its other end. By evening, he can still perform the job. He can no longer trust the word.
