The Oankali choose Lilith to wake the next group of humans. They strengthen her body, teach her to open the living walls, and tell her to prepare the others for Earth. She is given authority over almost everything except the terms that matter most.
She can teach people how to survive. She cannot offer them unaltered fertility, an independent route home, or the right to leave the Oankali plan. Her leadership begins inside a promise she has no power to make.
Lilith tells the sleepers the truth: Earth was destroyed and repaired; the Oankali saved them and intend to join with them genetically. Honesty does not earn trust. She knows where food is, can open walls, and moves with enhanced strength. Nikanj touches her with an intimacy the others cannot understand.
To the newly awakened, those facts are more persuasive than her explanation. Some think she is an Oankali construct or a collaborator who has ceased to be human. Their suspicion is not irrational. The captors really have altered her and really are using her as the human face of an imposed program.
A bridge sounds noble because everyone imagines crossing it. No one asks whether the bridge wants to carry both sides. Lilith is expected to translate Oankali instructions downward and human anger upward, while each group treats any judgment of her own as betrayal.
The training area resembles Earth closely enough that some humans decide it must already be Earth. Groups form, status contests return, and women face threats from men trying to restore command through force. The Oankali diagnosis of human hierarchy begins to reproduce itself in miniature.
That does not make captivity just. People denied information, security, and legitimate ways to disagree are being observed inside conditions that amplify fear. Violence belongs to the person who commits it; the environment that concentrates it still belongs in the account.
Lilith leaves the safer camp with Joseph and others because protection cannot become another reason no one may test her judgment. Helping people survive must include the possibility that they walk beyond the helper's shelter, even toward a mistake.
When Curt kills Joseph for healing too quickly, he turns “human” into a license to erase the human being in front of him. Joseph remembers, loves, fears, and chooses. A changed body cancels none of that. Purity protects the category by murdering its member.
Soon afterward Nikanj is gravely injured. Lilith lets the ooloi use her cancer-derived capacity for growth to rebuild itself. She does not save Nikanj because the Oankali system is right. She saves a particular life that has cared for her and now lies vulnerable before her.
This is the position neither camp can easily accept. Love for Nikanj does not authorize the gene trade. Anger at the Oankali does not require Lilith to let Nikanj die. She acts from a relation without allowing the relation to swallow every other judgment.
Most of the first group will be sent to Earth. Lilith is kept aboard. The Oankali say the others may kill her because of what she has become, and they need her to wake more survivors. The person who performed the hardest labor receives another assignment instead of a way home.
She is also pregnant with the child Nikanj began without first obtaining her decision. The Oankali can use her continuing care as proof that their plan has succeeded: she will love the child, help the sleepers, and remain connected to them. Lilith refuses that conversion. Doing necessary work does not mean endorsing the power that made it necessary.
She will wake another group because they deserve the truth and whatever protection she can give. She may love the child without declaring its conception just. She may live among the Oankali without allowing their account to become hers.
Lilith is not a seamless bridge between species. She is the seam that will not heal over: the visible place where rescue and capture, love and refusal, survival and self-direction fail to merge. The Oankali want connection to prove completion. Her anger keeps the connection open long enough for another future to remain imaginable.
