When Zhang loses his New York job, his practical knowledge does not disappear. What vanishes is the machinery that made anyone call that knowledge competence: tools, access, a project, and people obliged to listen.
He goes north to Baffin Island. In the Arctic, a technical judgment can decide whether a building holds heat and whether coworkers remain safe through the night.
Zhang has already worked with construction systems, but his technician's role lets employers use his skill without treating him as someone who may shape the whole design. Losing the position turns incomplete certification into apparent absence of talent.
Baffin Island changes the feedback. Materials, weather, energy, and human routines answer quickly. A solution that works cannot be hidden indefinitely inside an office hierarchy; a bad one cannot be repaired by a confident résumé.
The cold is not a moral teacher that makes Zhang worthy. It is dangerous labor accepted because safer institutions did not give him the same chance to grow. The lesson is to create responsibility, mentoring, and visible feedback without first exiling people to the edge.
Zhang later studies in Nanjing, where the novel's “Daoist engineering” asks designers to work with the existing tendencies of materials and systems. This is not mysticism replacing calculation. It is a refusal to imagine that a drawing encounters a passive world.
Metal expands, residents improvise, energy becomes heat somewhere, and maintenance falls on particular hands. A forceful design may stand while exporting its cost to people omitted from the plan.
Working with a system does not mean obeying every inherited structure. Some structures harm and must be dismantled. The method teaches attention, not submission: change enough to open a better path, then leave the people who live there able to keep changing it.
Nanjing gives Zhang knowledge, peers, and credentials. It also asks him to pass cultural and political filters and continues to make his sexuality dangerous. Recognition arrives through an institution that cannot recognize all of him.
He eventually returns to New York as an independent engineer and teacher. The movement matters more than a triumphant promotion. He can now decide how to use what he learned and make the path less accidental for someone after him.
Competence is neither a jewel an individual possesses alone nor a stamp an institution creates from nothing. It develops through tools, trust, standards, consequences, and teaching. A good system protects the public from dangerous work while refusing to turn its first judgment into a lifelong verdict. Zhang becomes an engineer when his knowledge enters relationships in which it can act, be corrected, and be passed on.
