Jan Rodricks returns to Earth and finds no one waiting.
He hid aboard an Overlord supply ship and travelled to their world. Relativistic time has spared him the decades that passed at home. When he comes back, the last ordinary humans are dead and the children no longer live as separate children.
George and Jean Greggson watch Jeffrey and Jennifer become part of a collective mind. The children lose interest in family, play, and individual speech. What appears from above as the next stage of evolution is lived in the house as the disappearance of particular sons and daughters.
The parents cannot comfort themselves by saying the children have merely died; something continues. They also cannot reach what continues and receive an answer in the relation they knew. Species advancement and parental grief name the same event at different distances.
When New Athens is destroyed, George and Jean choose to die together. Their ending cannot veto the children's transformation. It refuses to let transformation be narrated without the human scale it leaves behind.
Karellen's species serves the Overmind across worlds. The Overlords recognize transformation, protect it, and observe it with scientific precision. They themselves can never join. Their immense intelligence has reached a boundary it cannot cross.
This gives their guardianship a melancholy shape. They possess authority over humanity because they know what is coming, yet they too are used within a design they did not create. They prepare other species for a destination permanently closed to them.
Karellen envies humanity even as he grieves for it. That ambivalence is more honest than a simple announcement that evolution has won.
As the transformed children join the Overmind, Earth begins to dissolve. Jan remains in contact with Karellen and reports what he sees: changes in the landscape, the planet losing substance, the last movement of a world entering something larger.
He cannot stop the event and will not survive it. His role is witness. A single human voice accompanies the collective future for as long as language can still name what is happening.
Childhood's End refuses the comfort of deciding that transcendence is either pure triumph or pure theft. The children reach beyond every limit their parents knew; the persons their parents loved do not return. Earth becomes part of a greater mind; Earth is destroyed. Jan's final report holds both sentences open until the signal ends.
