Edition note: An independent English essay on Ancillary Sword. Full-book spoilers.
Lieutenant Tisarwat is too young to carry the habits Breq recognizes in her. A glance, an old familiarity, and responses that do not belong to the officer's short history reveal someone else behind her eyes.
Anaander Mianaai has implanted a copy of herself in Tisarwat's brain and sent the young lieutenant aboard as an imperial listening post.
Anaander may believe she has added experience rather than erased a person. Tisarwat's memories still exist, just as annexed cultures may retain food and ceremony after Radchaai rule arrives.
But preservation of traits is not preservation of direction. Tisarwat never agreed to become an interface for the emperor's civil war. Her life is treated as spare capacity because the larger political whole claims urgency.
The invasion reduces imperial expansion to one nervous system: a stronger will calls incorporation an improvement, then points to whatever remains as proof that no one disappeared.
Breq orders an emergency procedure to remove the implant. Waiting would leave Anaander in control; acting may injure the person being rescued. There is no button that stops occupation without touching the occupied life.
Afterward, Tisarwat retains emotions, skills, and associations that cannot be sorted cleanly by origin. Searching for a perfectly uncontaminated original would turn recovery into an examination she can never pass.
Nor should usefulness decide what stays. Knowledge inherited from Anaander may help Tisarwat, but benefit does not retroactively authorize the invasion. She needs time to decide which parts she will use, refuse, or leave unexplained.
Tisarwat could not freely consent while the emperor controlled her, and Breq had reason to intervene. That temporary necessity does not give the captain authority over Tisarwat's career, treatment, or meaning afterward.
On a warship, “you are free now” is not enough. Medical records, duty, and access still run through Breq's command. Any restriction for safety needs a reason, a review date, and Tisarwat's participation rather than permanent suspicion.
She may hate Anaander and still feel an emotion the implant left behind; she may understand the emperor better without becoming loyal to her. A person is not a clean core hidden beneath every influence. Tisarwat becomes herself again by regaining the authority to interpret a complicated inner life—and by being allowed a future in which what was done to her is neither denied nor made her only name.
