Why Does Nao’s Bullying Require an Entire System of Bystanders?

Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-book spoilers.

Nao is humiliated, assaulted, and collectively excluded. Responsibility begins with those who directly attack her, but the pattern persists because classmates watch, teachers look away, and the school protects ordinary appearances. Each bystander can say, truthfully, “I did not hit her.” Together they create a place where attackers expect no consequence and Nao expects no witness.

Degrees of responsibility matter. A frightened child is not equivalent to an adult authority or organizer of abuse. Distinguishing them should help design different responses, not restore the system once one obvious offender is punished.

Neutrality adopts the stronger story

When teachers treat exclusion as classroom consensus—or participate in making Nao symbolically absent—authority gives violence a legitimate surface. Calls to keep order or note that “both sides” have problems ignore that only one side carries the existing harm alone.

Educators must publicly name what occurred, protect reports, offer confidential routes to help, and change the rewards for spectatorship. A response aimed chiefly at making Nao more agreeable translates the group’s violence into her failure to adapt.

Recording and sharing extend the attack beyond school hours. Platforms are not neutral containers when ranking, persistence, and recommendation reward humiliating material. Protection may require rapid removal, barriers to re-uploading, limited preservation of evidence, and prevention of a search result permanently binding a person to her worst moment.

Nao’s American childhood, Japanese return, language, and family situation become convenient entry points for exclusion. Difference does not cause the violence; the group’s authority to define normal makes difference usable as a weapon.

Repair returns the story

Institutions prefer manageable summaries: adolescent conflict, misunderstanding, transfer. Such labels reduce liability and require Nao to accept an account that does not match experience.

Repair starts by letting her describe what happened, choose what becomes public, shape safety measures, and refuse a staged reconciliation. Jiko’s listening matters because it does not hurry to correct Nao’s interpretation. A school becomes trustworthy only when the harmed student no longer has to disappear so that everyone else can call the classroom whole.
