Mahit enters Teixcalaan with another ambassador in her mind. Yskandr Aghavn's imago carries language, reflexes, and political memory meant to keep Lsel's work from beginning again with every death.
The version is fifteen years out of date. It knows the City Yskandr first entered, not the relationships and bargain that eventually killed him.
The young Yskandr can warn Mahit about an allusion or make a street feel half remembered. This embodied confidence is more powerful than an archive because it arrives before conscious checking.
It also carries his hunger for Teixcalaan, which resembles hers. When predecessor and successor share a desire, the same bias can sound like two independent votes.
The imago expands Mahit's starting point; it cannot require the present to behave like the past. Inheritance becomes useful only when reality is allowed to disappoint memory.
Soon after arrival, the imago fails. Someone on Lsel damaged it before Mahit left, fearing that Yskandr had gone too far toward empire and that his successor might surrender the station's secret technology.
The fear is justified by part of the truth. The method is still a betrayal. To protect collective independence, Lsel secretly alters the body of the person asked to defend it and leaves her alone in the capital at the moment she most needs support.
Removing influence does not restore a pure Mahit. Integration has begun, and Yskandr's sudden absence feels like loss inside herself. A small state can reproduce the boundary violations it fears from a large one.
Mahit later receives the imago recovered from Yskandr's corpse. This version remembers his intimacy with Nineteen Adze and his proposal to trade imago technology to the aging emperor Six Direction in exchange for Lsel's safety.
Understanding the bargain does not bind Mahit to complete it. Yskandr no longer bears the consequences, and his private trust cannot authorize the future of an entire station.
Nor is the new imago simply the old ambassador returned. Mahit has made choices during his absence; their renewed integration creates a life neither entered alone. The dead may provide memory, warning, and companionship. They cannot acquire a permanent vote that the living are forbidden to outgrow.
