Twenty Cicada takes the alien fungus into his body. The officer who has served beside Nine Hibiscus becomes connected to the collective mind humans have been fighting.
For the first time, “we” can travel in both directions. The bridge is not a neutral device. It is a person accepting an irreversible change.
Humans see one body and assume one person. The alien network experiences many bodies as parts of a connected self. It may lose a body without losing the whole, yet the lost position and experience need not be nothing.
The collective, in turn, struggles to understand why separate human bodies each possess full standing. Isolation looks like damage from a world organized through shared thought.
Difference explains how each side misread the other; it does not erase the dead. Peace requires behavioral boundaries before perfect philosophy: do not treat a human individual as a disposable fragment, and do not assume each alien body can betray or negotiate apart from the whole.
Twenty Cicada comes from a culture Teixcalaan absorbed and has retained forms of collective song the center finds provincial until they become useful. The empire first asks border people to assimilate, then recruits their difference when the center reaches a world it cannot read.
His choice deserves respect precisely because it is his. Nine Hibiscus may explain the danger and search for alternatives; love cannot forbid him from taking a risk he judges necessary. The empire cannot convert his loyalty into automatic consent either.
After contact succeeds, his well-being must remain part of the treaty. If he is kept as a permanent interface while everyone else celebrates peace, translation has simply found another body to use up.
As one commander prepares to destroy the alien homeworld, eleven-year-old Eight Antidote helps carry a warning through the Sunlit network to the front. The child makes a real judgment. His success does not prove a political system was right to make catastrophe depend on a child's improvisation.
Nine Hibiscus stops the attack and chooses the uncertain work of contact. This saves lives without declaring the aliens harmless or the earlier killings unreal.
Teixcalaan remains an empire after the ceasefire. Mahit still lacks an easy home, Twenty Cicada has paid a cost no ceremony can refund, and both species must learn how the other counts a life. The peace is worth defending because it leaves those questions open. A desolation is quiet because nobody remains to object; this quieter battlefield becomes peace only if the new silence keeps making room for another answer.
