Han Qin (秦汉秦汉秦漢) ·

The easiest lovers to explain are the ones we invent. He does whatever the example requires. She says the necessary sentence at the door. Everything fits, partly because neither person can object to the account. A received story is less accommodating. Elizabeth corrects her judgment before she falls in love. Jane has announced her departure before leaving at dawn. Penelope’s test may be testing something other than love.

Such stories offer one way of understanding why love stories endure. Family, status, war, an existing marriage and passing years put pressure on a particular attachment. Could another person do? Will someone wait, reconsider, let the beloved refuse? The clues become unusually concentrated. They remain clues. A costly choice cannot by itself certify an inward life.

Fiction sometimes offers something more: a narrator tells us what a character thinks. We can read that inward account where it is supplied. Where it is not supplied, a theory cannot invent it. Nor does a story’s popularity establish that its lovers are better or its choices correct. Reception has a history beyond the question examined here.

These six cases test only part of the account, not every claim in the preceding essays. There is also a bias in the selection: four involve an existing marriage. Its commitments and institutional dimensions do not disappear because we temporarily attend to love. Equally, judging those dimensions cannot substitute for asking whether and how love occurs.

A correction and a departure

In Pride and Prejudice, Darcy’s first proposal brings affection and social condescension into the same speech. His attachment resists his own sense of what his family and position should allow. Yet Elizabeth also hears him explain the obstacles her inferior connections have presented. The love need not be unreal for the borrowed measure to be present too.

Elizabeth refuses him forcefully. His subsequent letter makes her reconsider both her account of Darcy and her trust in Wickham. She discovers how vanity has compromised the discernment she took pride in. Deception remains Wickham’s part; the judgment she made cannot simply be transferred to him. Both facts can be acknowledged without one absorbing the other.

But this correction precedes her love for Darcy. Describing it as a change within her love would rewrite the novel. What becomes visible first is the person who has judged, not yet the person who loves. Reconsideration makes room for love without performing love in advance.

Darcy later says her criticism taught him something. Does that prove the criticism was an act of cultivation? No. She expressed her judgment and refused him; she did not require him to adopt her account as his own definition. That distinction matters, but not taking over another’s judgment does not by itself establish an opening. Some of her accusations were mistaken. Later benefit cannot certify every earlier word.

Darcy’s own retrospective account supplies further material: he recognizes his earlier self-absorption and contempt beyond the family circle. It is his account of a change, not an observer’s permanent verdict on his character. The interest lies less in two people passing a moral examination than in their confident judgments becoming genuinely revisable.

Jane Eyre presses the promise question harder. Rochester loves Jane while concealing that his wife is alive. He offers a marriage he knows cannot be provided as represented. At the interrupted ceremony he acknowledges his intention. His love and the falsity of that undertaking need not receive the same verdict. The former does not make the latter disappear.

He then proposes a life together in which Jane’s future identity and their union are presented as settled. She refuses. The novel lets us read her inward struggle: she knows his pain, feels the temptation, and still will not set aside her own position simply because keeping it is difficult. Her departure is not evidence that she lacked love.

She leaves before dawn without another farewell. That image alone could look like someone silently abandoning a commitment. But she has already told Rochester that she must leave and part from him, and he understands. Missing a farewell ceremony is not missing a communicated departure. No single ritual has a monopoly on making an ending clear.

The original promise’s conditions matter too. Jane undertook to marry someone who could marry her; that condition was never present. An account that mechanically requires performance while ignoring what was actually offered has stopped reading the promise seriously. Her later return belongs to a different moment. It cannot retrospectively turn this departure into an unacknowledged abandonment.

Waiting and refusing

Penelope’s twenty years of waiting are not empty merely because Odysseus is absent. She uses weaving and unweaving to delay the suitors through arrangements of her own. He still counts in her life. The marital commitments require their own examination; duration alone does not answer every question about them.

The famous bed is a particularly exact test. Penelope orders it moved out of the chamber. Odysseus knows why that is not an ordinary instruction: he made it around a tree whose trunk remained rooted in place. His response enables her to recognize the person before her.

That is a staged test, but its question is whether he is who he appears to be, not whether he loves her. Treating every test as a demand for love would erase her fear of an impostor. His response also introduces a question about the bed’s continued place and fidelity. Several purposes can enter the same exchange without becoming one question.

Odysseus has also concealed his identity to see how his wife behaves before she knows he has returned. That comes closer to a test of love with a criterion she has not been told. Concealment also serves a different purpose while the suitors remain dangerous. The story supplies both uses. We should not discard whichever one makes the account less tidy.

Penelope finally embraces him. It is a powerful clue to a meeting, not an all-purpose certification of their inner states. Identifying one another and meeting without preempting the other’s part remain different questions. We can value the scene without converting that value into a proof.

Chapter Eight of Eugene Onegin leaves a different question suspended. Onegin encounters Tatyana years later, now a socially admired princess, and pursues her intensely. She asks why he wants her now: is it she, or her position, the public visibility of a scandal, the distinction her surrender might give him?

She has asked whether this is a direction or a prize. Asking does not mean she knows. The novel does not give Onegin a conclusive inward answer that settles her suspicion. A reader who declares that he really loves only social vanity supplies what Pushkin withholds. A precise suspicion is still not access to another person’s whole concern.

Tatyana acknowledges loving him and states that she will remain faithful to her marriage. Refusal does not cancel her love; love does not oblige her to go with him. Her account of how she married makes her fidelity’s origins a real question, not one settled by a passive expression or a fragment of biography. Where she stands now is stated. The entire history of that stand cannot be compressed into a verdict from outside.

Together these cases sharpen two distinctions. Testing an identity is not necessarily testing love. Refusing a person is not sufficient evidence that one does not love them. A reading should be capable of stopping where its story stops answering.

Thinking for someone, and letting someone stay

Casablanca is often remembered as a story of letting go. Read the airport scene more slowly and the action is less simple. In Paris, Ilsa fails to join Rick at the station, but sends a note saying she cannot leave with him or see him again. His subsequent bitterness is a real effect. So is the communicated departure. Withholding a reason is not identical to leaving someone unaware that participation has ended.

After they meet again, Ilsa says she no longer knows what to do and asks Rick to think for them both, for everyone. The request is hers. Asking someone loved to help think in exhaustion or confusion is not automatically surrendering oneself. The question concerns the scope of what has been entrusted.

At the airport, she objects to the plan for her to leave with Laszlo. Rick interrupts, invokes her earlier request and presents his conclusion as settled. He supplies reasons involving danger, Laszlo and her future regret. Reasons can be substantial without leaving the recipient’s present objection a place to count. Their presence alone does not establish that her judgment remains open.

The issue is not a final judgment that Rick is either noble or selfish. It is what this use of the request does: asking you to think last night did not necessarily hand over the ability to disagree today. The film shows her boarding. It does not supply a complete account of how she later understands that decision. The result cannot certify the full inward completion of either help or control.

This also exposes an unfinished question in the account. Accepting a request, thinking on someone’s behalf and receiving their later objection are connected but distinct acts. Identifying one use of an earlier request to stop a present objection does not explain every legitimate delegation. ‘Never think for anyone’ would evade the problem, not solve it.

Paris remaining in their memories is another matter. A shared past need not mean that either still possesses the other. Rick does not demand that they reproduce it. Preserving something and exacting its return are different actions; departure need not retrospectively make the remembered encounter false.

The last case is Robert James Waller’s novel The Bridges of Madison County, not details imported from its film adaptation. While Francesca’s family is away, photographer Robert stops to ask directions. They fall in love over four days. He asks her to leave with him. She stays. He leaves alone, and later invites her to meet again without making the invitation a command.

The marriage’s commitments do not vanish because this love is moving. We are attending to the love without claiming to have settled that other dimension. Robert expresses extraordinary certainty about the encounter. His expression is material about his side, not a certificate of both inward lives, nor evidence that a rare four-day love is more genuine than forty years of ordinary company.

A later letter supplies something his departure alone could not. He describes repeatedly wanting to take her away, and remembering her words and respecting her feelings instead. A thought he did not enact toward her is not an operation already imposed on her circumstances. Nor could merely seeing him leave establish how he recognized her choice. His account gives the reader additional material, not unlimited access to everything.

Their four days together end. Contact afterward is slight; each person’s love need not end with it. Letters, photographs and the belongings that eventually arrive are actual traces reaching another life. Remembering those days is not a new reply from the absent person. Death does not decide how the survivor must love or remember.

Several endings thus come apart: shared presence stops, contact thins, love remains separately, effects continue beyond death. None automatically settles the others. The story does not require a comprehensive moral verdict before these differences can be seen.

Six readings leave no list of certified lovers. Some distinctions have become clearer; the scope of entrusted judgment remains open; other claims await other cases. A theory that only arranges to find itself correct cannot hear its characters. A closer reading lets the stories ask back.
