I Want You to Stay. The Choice Is Yours.

He does not pretend to be indifferent. He does not turn his wish into her duty. Loving this particular person and recognizing her life as her own have to remain together.

Han Qin (秦汉秦汉秦漢) ·

She plays cello in an orchestra. He teaches physics at a secondary school. They have been together for four years when an orchestra in another city invites her to join. Going would mean living apart. Declining might mean losing a chance that will not return. She thinks about it for a week, then asks him one evening: do you want me to go?

“I want you to stay,” he says. “That is mine. Whether you go is yours.”

The sentence is not effortless. He has not become indifferent, or finished being unhappy before allowing himself to speak. There are sleepless nights. Hearing about a musician she will perform with, he briefly thinks, You can only be mine. He does not say it; after a while he recognizes something wrong with the thought.

This essay begins with the two things he is trying to keep together. He does not want a replacement who is equally kind and equally accomplished. He wants her. Yet her life does not exist to complete his love. Neither truth can be substituted for the other.

This person, with a life of her own

Recognizing someone’s life as their own is not, by itself, romantic love. A teacher can recognize a student in that way; a stranger can recognize another stranger. Love includes something further: this particular person is not interchangeable for me. Someone equally admirable would not amount to the same answer.

The reverse inference fails too. Finding someone irreplaceable does not automatically leave them free. ‘I want you to stay’ can be an honest disclosure. Follow it with ‘Therefore you cannot go,’ and my direction has become a measure imposed on hers.

The physics teacher has not erased his side. He says what he wants. She need not declare his sadness irrational before considering the move. Her answer can matter deeply, unsettle him, make him think again. It is not the certificate he must obtain before his love is allowed to count.

He wants her to love him. Wanting a response is different from making her response a condition of treating her this way. The less he has to keep checking whether he has given enough and received an equal return, the more attention he can spare for what she has actually been thinking about this week.

He still cannot fully explain why she wants the orchestra. She mentions its principal player, its repertoire, a wish to try before turning thirty-five. He can listen, ask, approach her reasons more closely. Closeness does not authorize him to announce that he knows her desire better than she does. More material is not complete access to another person.

There is a useful point of contact with Erich Fromm’s account of respect: wanting the beloved to develop in their own way, rather than into someone who serves us. The present inquiry is not a ready-made lesson in how to love. It asks whether this particular exchange leaves her part in judging with her.

Loving only you is not a claim to your exclusivity

This series makes an explicit choice about the kind of love being read here: across the moments in which it operates in this way, the beloved remains this person, rather than alternating between two people. That is a philosophical stance, not a theorem deduced simply from refusing to treat people as tools, and not an observer’s license to certify other people’s feelings.

Continuity does not require thinking about her every second. Teaching, marking papers, catching a bus need not repeat a declaration of love. An interruption is not vacillation. The unspoken thought, You can only be mine, points to another possibility: he too can turn his wish into her rule. That moment must be read without pronouncing a final verdict on him or on four years together.

If loving moments really alternate between two people, a declaration of constancy cannot erase the wavering. Nor is this way of loving a permanent rank achieved once and retained forever. Making room for another person is difficult. Failure remains possible.

His loving only her cannot, on its own, purchase her loving only him. They can promise exclusivity, and such a promise has genuine force and consequences; this distinction does not excuse ignoring an agreement. But ‘I love only you’ cannot supply a matching promise in her name.

Where each freely chooses the other, two independently held choices meet. Their exclusivity alone still cannot certify the encounter described here. Exclusivity can have other sources: exchange, fear of loss, isolation from everyone else. An identical appearance does not settle what holds it up.

One thing must not become exclusive: recognition of people as having lives of their own. He loves her, but his students, colleagues and strangers do not consequently become usable objects. Kierkegaard’s challenge to preferential love presses precisely here. This essay responds by distinguishing the person loved from the people recognized, rather than allowing love for one to swallow recognition of the rest.

Not waiting for you does not mean enduring everything

Consider someone else: a translator who loves an editor she regularly works with. He has clearly said he does not love her. Her love need not wait for his approval before it has happened. His refusal does not reduce his standing as a person. Her love does not give him a matching obligation to love her back.

Knowing how she feels, he begins sending urgent work late at night: ‘You’re the best,’ followed by a deadline the next morning. Loving him does not require surrendering every evening. She can decline the manuscript, stop answering at that hour, or end contact. None requires her to revoke his standing as someone whose life is his own.

A one-way love can be complete without being superior to mutual love. Completeness does not mean that a response is unimportant, or that enough love should enable someone to bear unlimited demands. ‘If you loved me, you would accept anything’ recruits love to occupy her time and judgment. It cannot be a reason to remove her boundaries.

Return to the cellist. Suppose her partner says, ‘That orchestra is wrong for you. I love you, so you cannot go. Even considering it means you reject my love.’ Accepting his judgment has now become the test of acknowledging his love. She must first face a charge of not understanding him before she can think differently.

‘I am worried you might regret it’ can do something else: offer a reason she may consider and decline. A gentle voice does not settle the difference. Neither does her eventual departure make an earlier pressure disappear. We need to read what the words did at the time, not award them a verdict from tone or outcome.

Another imitation looks especially considerate. He says, ‘Whatever you want is fine,’ while withdrawing what he actually thinks merely to preserve harmony. That is not the same as leaving her room; his own contribution has disappeared. Silence on one occasion proves nothing, however. Choosing when to speak can also be his own judgment.

Beauvoir’s account of surrendering oneself in love makes the danger vivid. It cannot all be reduced to an individual’s failure of firmness: social circumstances can reward self-sacrifice and make it the available path. Keeping those conditions visible, we can still ask whose voice is being handed over here. Years without arguments do not prove that both people can still say no.

She takes the job. In the second year away, she sends a long letter: she has fallen in love with someone else and wants to end their relationship. The departure is made clear; the earlier promises and reliance are not simply declared settled. He answers without announcing that she has lost nothing over four years, or using his grief to decide her next step.

This love can end. Continuity is not permanence. Her departure ends their ongoing shared involvement; whether his love ends is a further question at his end. Years later he loves someone else. If the earlier love has ended, this is succession, not vacillation. A new love cannot retrospectively prove that the former one had already ended.

Ending contact need not cancel recognition. Continuing to love does not entitle him to obstruct her departure or pressure her through colleagues. What remains—the reliance, the promises, the wishes once heard—needs to be faced. It is not a pass authorizing him to bring her back.

Both halves of the sentence remain difficult. I want you to stay: real, and not something that must be extinguished. The choice is yours: not a performance of generosity. Keeping both is different from gathering her into my love, or handing myself over in its name.
