My Love, My Misreading
Calling a love mine does not make the other person mine. Sometimes the distinction becomes visible in a much smaller admission: I was the one who read those messages that way.
She is a vet; he works in urban planning. They have known each other for almost a year. He loves her, though he is not sure she knows it. Then, for a month, her messages grow shorter. Replies take days. They sound polite, almost formal. He reads them repeatedly and arrives at an explanation: she is withdrawing.
He remembers saying something awkward in front of friends. Perhaps she has thought less of him ever since. In a letter to an old friend he calls her inconsistent, warm one moment and cold the next. He writes that she has made him misunderstand. Only later does he learn that her mother was in hospital. She worked at the clinic by day and stayed at the bedside at night, answering on her phone in the corridor.
He reads the messages again and blushes. The meaning had not simply been lying there. He had read a meaning into them. I got this wrong. Something that had been placed entirely on her side returns to his.
This is not a promotion to a more advanced kind of love. Being caught by someone’s voice and recognizing that the love is mine can be aspects of the same experience. Here we follow the second: whatever brought this love about, it is not something she must own for me, nor something fate can take responsibility for.
The judgment comes back to someone
To call the love mine is not to call her mine. Nor does it make me its master, able to start or stop it on command. The ownership at issue is much smaller: there is someone to whom a mistaken judgment can return.
When everything seems obvious, that someone is easy to miss. Her coldness appears to announce itself; my resentment seems simply to follow the facts. Error exposes the missing step. Someone had to move from those brief messages to the conclusion that she no longer cared. That person was me.
Suppose she really withheld information. Perhaps she did not want him to worry and wrote that everything was fine. Her silence would then be part of the explanation for his mistake. It would not make the interpretation hers. What she concealed and what he concluded are separate matters; acknowledging either one does not cancel the other.
Taking back a judgment is not taking the blame for everything. ‘I am terrible; I should never love anyone’ may sound self-directed while avoiding the particular mistake altogether. It replaces an inquiry into how I read those messages with a verdict on my entire person. The smaller admission need not be a trial of the self.
An observer also has limits. Hearing him say that she made him misunderstand does not establish that no reconsideration took place within him. He might blame her aloud while recognizing his own part privately. He might apologize beautifully while refusing to reconsider. Words offer evidence; they do not open the whole inner event to inspection.
He need not conduct a ceremonial confession before the recognition counts. Reading the messages again may be enough for that inward turn. Telling her would be a further event: his words would enter her circumstances and invite a response. The two should not be confused.
She is looking at him too. During that month his messages become longer and more insistent. She may conclude that he thinks only of himself. She may also be wrong: the insistence may come from fear. The person loved is not merely a figure in someone else’s field of vision. She makes judgments, can misread, and can reconsider.
Later they discuss the month. Each explains a misunderstanding. Neither can perform the other’s recognition or revision. He can offer what she missed without prescribing how she must now understand him. That difference is part of what can leave a conversation open.
Wanting to be seen, requiring a reflection
Once they are together, he discovers that he likes himself in love: attentive, patient, willing to wait. Nothing about that discovery is automatically objectionable. Wanting the person one loves to see one’s care belongs to closeness. Hoping she understands how frightened he was need not make her a mirror.
But the arrangement can turn around. He asks whether he understands her well. She says that he does in some ways, not in others. The second half is unwelcome. He asks again until she gives the answer he wanted. Being seen has become a demand to be reflected in an image prepared beforehand.
The question itself need not do this. If ‘Not entirely’ can remain an answer, the exchange is still open. Nor can frequency or anxiety settle the issue. Asking often, or feeling unsettled when she does not reply, does not by itself prove that he is taking over her part. The question is whether her answer is allowed to differ from his script.
‘Do you still love me?’ can likewise be a vulnerable question. It changes when every response must provide the same reassurance, when silence or hesitation must be corrected, and when her reply is assigned the job of establishing who he is. She is no longer simply being asked. Her looking is being made to service his image of himself as loved.
Two things need separating: loving her and also liking the person I become in loving her; loving, above all, that agreeable person she is required to confirm. The latter contains plenty of talk about the self. It need not contain the modest self to which an error can return.
An attempt to fix her response is not proof that it has succeeded. She might refuse, name the demand, or answer differently. What the action becomes in her understanding and subsequent conduct is not decided by counting how often he asked. The direction of an act and its completion at the other end are different questions.
Another friend has just separated and urgently wants to fall in love again. Anyone kind enough seems a possible candidate. The important thing is to be in love; who arrives matters less. Augustine recognized something resembling this wish to love before there is a particular beloved. Yet wanting love does not automatically make everyone interchangeable. That further question must still be asked.
A private fantasy also differs from an interpersonal demand. Imagining that romance will rescue me is initially something happening at my end. Telling someone that they have come to save me and must heal the previous relationship assigns them a part to perform. Only when the fantasy enters their life through words or actions do we read what it is doing toward them.
None of this supplies a diagnosis of narcissism. Freud investigated ways in which people may love their present, former, or ideal selves in another person; that is an inquiry into the origins of attachment. Here we do not classify a person from those origins. We ask what happens in this encounter: can her view still be hers?
The love can be mine without being fully explained
Ask him why he loves her. He mentions the steadiness of her hands treating an injured cat, the way she pauses before speaking. He can name things. He also knows that the list is not complete. Recognizing the love as his does not make its entire history transparent.
How he grew up, whom he met, what taught him to fear losing someone: much of that was not chosen. Acknowledgment does not erase those conditions. Nor does an incomplete explanation disqualify a love. Being unable to give every reason need not be evasion or a shortage of sincerity.
Later he jokes that they must have known each other in a previous life. A retrospective story can have poetry without becoming the cause of the original encounter. If destiny means that he no longer has to own his judgments, it moves the speaker out of the picture. If it becomes ‘You were destined to be mine,’ it also begins writing her future for her.
Years later he may see that part of his love concerned an imagined woman: always calm, always available when needed. The actual woman gets frightened, tired, and sometimes sends only a few words from a hospital corridor. That imagined part can end without making every remaining part false. Seeing more clearly need not mean ceasing to love.
A love dependent on a misreading may also genuinely end. ‘I misunderstood’ and ‘You must admit that you deceived me into loving you’ meet that ending differently. Any actual concealment remains a separate matter. So do promises and reliance already established. An ending cannot settle them all by changing the account.
The turn can even precede love. Someone discovers that they judged too quickly and becomes able to see a person they had dismissed. Correcting a judgment is not already falling in love. It can remove something that prevented a meeting.
There is no portrait here of the person who has finally learned to love properly. There is a smaller distinction. I can acknowledge that the original attraction was not mine to arrange, while admitting that the judgments formed around it were not made for me by someone else. The love is mine. For that very reason, she need not become its mirror.
