Reading Rickshaw Boy

Three essays on one rickshaw lost three times, Huniu and Xiaofuzi’s constrained choices, and a living man whose deterioration is more than poverty.

Xiangzi wants something small and intelligible: to own the rickshaw he pulls and keep the product of his labor. He is unusually strong, disciplined, and willing to save. The repeated destruction of that plan tests the promise that effort can secure an independent self.

The essays refuse both a simple victim story and a moral fall story. Structures repeatedly strip Xiangzi’s work of result; he also learns their logic and begins to impose costs on others. The ending is bleak because survival remains after the person’s organizing judgment has been damaged.

Lao She's Rickshaw Boy. Full-book spoilers throughout.
