Reading WALL·E

Three essays on a machine that develops preferences beyond its assigned function, another machine that learns to see care inside a recording, and a plant that passes through many systems without ceasing to be alive.

WALL·E is often described as a warning about consumerism or a love story between two robots. Both descriptions are true and incomplete. The film’s deeper movement is from designation to name, from directive to judgment, and from a biological sample to something that particular beings must keep alive.

These readings begin with the objects WALL·E saves after seven centuries of work, follow EVE as a record changes what her mission contains, and end with the plant in the boot. Together they ask how preference appears beside function, how attachment can reorder without abolishing a public purpose, and how care can begin before usefulness is known.
