Reading V for Vendetta

Three essays on a regime that turns people into categories, a liberation imposed without consent, and the unresolved ownership of the final lever.

Three Acts, Three Forms of Power

Norsefire compiles a list, V builds a prison, and Evey moves a lever. Across those three acts, the series asks one question: when someone is certain that he represents the right, can he still leave another person room to refuse, depart, and decide?

The answer does not require treating dictator and dissident as equivalents. Their purposes and consequences differ radically. Only after preserving that difference can we see the subtler boundary the film exposes: a person who fights domination may still decide, in the name of liberation, what somebody else must become.

This series reads James McTeigue's film adaptation as its own text rather than treating it as interchangeable with Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel.
