The Machine

Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Gabriele Muccino’s 2006 film The Pursuit of Happyness. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.

Chris Gardner moves through San Francisco carrying a portable bone-density scanner. The device is not only a symbol of burden. It is inventory: one of the machines into which he placed the family’s savings, each sale temporarily capable of paying rent and each loss capable of making the month impossible.

I. The film begins with a mistake

The scanners cost far more than ordinary X-ray equipment while offering doctors only a modest practical advantage. Chris believed there would be a market and bought heavily. The film does not invent a villain who deceived him. His judgment was wrong, and the household absorbs the consequence.

This beginning matters because later success can tempt viewers to treat every earlier decision as secretly correct. It was not. A person can recover through admirable action without the original error becoming wisdom.

II. An asset that must be carried

Because the machines do not sell, Chris must continue selling them. He protects the case on buses, chases people who take it, repairs damaged units, and reorganizes each day around the possibility that one doctor might buy. The device is simultaneously failed plan, remaining capital, and immediate survival.

Its weight makes economics visible. Wealth for Chris is not an entry in an account. It is an awkward object that can be stolen, dropped, broken, or exchanged for another month.

III. Linda’s departure

Linda works double shifts at a hotel laundry while bills and tax notices accumulate. When Chris announces an unpaid brokerage internship, her disbelief is justified. He has no finance degree, no institutional background, a child to support, unsold scanners, and six months in which the program will pay nothing.

Her departure should not be flattened into betrayal. She has been sustaining an arrangement that no longer appears survivable. When Chris insists that Christopher remain with him, she finally leaves the child with the parent who most insists on taking responsibility.

IV. Why the internship matters

Chris sees well-dressed employees leaving Dean Witter and asks a man with a red Ferrari what he does. The answer—stockbroker—does not provide a plan so much as a direction. For the first time in months, Chris can see an activity in which effort might accumulate rather than merely slow decline.

The internship is irrational if treated as a guaranteed route to income. It becomes intelligible as the only visible path on which tomorrow could differ from today through actions he can perform.

V. Error does not cancel authorship

Chris is responsible for the machine and for the new risk he takes. Responsibility here is not blame frozen in the past. It is the continuing work of carrying consequences while selecting the next move without certainty.

The film’s strongest claim is not that Chris always chooses correctly. It is that a bad choice does not exhaust the chooser, and a person can remain the author of what he does with an error he cannot undo.
