Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of The Intouchables. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.

He Sets the Table, Then Leaves

For six months Philippe has written to Éléonore. On paper she encounters his mind—his wit, his poems, his carefully chosen sentences. She does not encounter the wheelchair.

When Driss asks why he will not call, Philippe's answer is revealing: writing allows him to communicate more fully. Beneath that claim lies a fear. In letters he can control when and how his body enters the relationship. A meeting would end that control.

Driss takes the telephone and dials.

A useful intrusion

The call goes well. Soon Philippe and Éléonore speak regularly and exchange photographs. They arrange to meet in Paris. Philippe goes to the restaurant and waits, but panic overtakes him; he leaves before she arrives.

Driss has opened a door, but he cannot walk Philippe through it. The first call worked because an intrusive act created a possibility Philippe then accepted. The failed meeting establishes the limit: another person cannot manufacture courage on your behalf.

That limit becomes important at the end.

Before then, trouble in Driss's family enters Philippe's house. Driss's younger relative is entangled with violent people, and the household that raised him needs him. Philippe tells Driss that he should not spend his whole life pushing a wheelchair. He releases him from the job at precisely the moment Philippe has come to depend on him most.

Professional caregivers replace Driss. Their technique is better, but Philippe withdraws. He stops shaving, avoids going out, and loses interest in the world. Yvonne eventually calls Driss back.

Driss shaves him—first turning his beard into a sequence of ridiculous shapes—dresses him, and drives fast enough to revive their old conspiracy. He takes Philippe to a seaside restaurant, arranges the table, and announces that someone else will join him for lunch.

Éléonore enters as Driss leaves.

Care, interference, and the right to refuse

It is tempting to describe this finale as perfect care: Driss creates the opportunity and then withdraws so Philippe can decide what happens next. There is truth in that reading. Driss does not sit at the table, speak for Philippe, or dictate the outcome. Éléonore and Philippe must make the encounter their own.

But the scene is not neutral. Driss deliberately conceals the plan because Philippe has already fled one meeting. He places a man with limited mobility in a situation that is harder to leave. Affection does not erase that coercive edge.

The film asks us to enjoy the trespass because Driss knows Philippe well and because the meeting appears welcome. In life, good intentions and a happy outcome would not be enough to establish a general right to override another person's refusal.

What makes the ending persuasive is narrower. Driss has learned the difference between doing everything for Philippe and returning a choice to him. He takes care of transport and physical preparation, then removes himself from the conversation. Philippe retains the ability to speak, fall silent, reject intimacy, or allow it to grow—even if Driss has improperly chosen the setting and timing.

Making room without owning the result

Philippe has performed a related act for Driss. He offered responsibility without demanding gratitude, introduced him to new forms of art without prescribing who he should become, and ended their employment when the job threatened to consume the rest of Driss's life.

Neither man simply “saves” the other. Each uses power at times, crosses boundaries, and makes guesses about what the other needs. Their friendship is valuable not because it is pure, but because both gradually learn to stop treating the other's life as a project whose result belongs to them.

The film closes before the lunch can be evaluated. We do not hear the conversation or receive a romantic guarantee. Driss looks through the glass, sees that the meeting has begun, and walks away.

That withdrawal matters. Helping can prepare a room, arrange a ride, make an introduction, or restore an option fear has closed. It cannot supply the words that must be spoken across the table. The other person's future begins where the helper's plan ends.

The title cards then return the comedy to its real-life inspiration: Philippe Pozzo di Borgo remarried and had two young daughters; Abdel Sellou built a business and a family; the two remained close. Those facts are not proof that every intrusion was justified. They are evidence that the relationship did not end when one man's usefulness to the other did.
