Three essays on a name taken by contract, a hungry spirit taught the language of exchange, and a child whose memory restores what the bathhouse turns into property.

Spirited Away begins with a child who does not want to enter a tunnel and builds its world around systems that ignore her refusal. Her parents assume that purchasing power licenses possession. Yubaba’s bathhouse measures beings by labor and revenue. No-Face learns that gold can summon a crowd. Each system offers a different conversion table for determining who may eat, remain, speak, or be seen.

Chihiro survives without becoming the strongest participant in any of them. She keeps one purpose outside the bathhouse’s accounting, remembers names that power has reduced or erased, and repeatedly responds to beings before knowing what they can return. The film’s smallest gestures—a door opened against the rain, a name carried for another person, a refusal to identify parents as livestock—become ways of declining the world’s terms without pretending she can escape their danger.
