Reading Scent of a Woman

Three essays on truth priced by institutional power, a final trip that requires a guide but rejects a witness, and two different forms of refusal.

Scent of a Woman places Charlie between adults who know what he cannot afford to lose. The film becomes sharper when its famous speeches do not settle every question: informing can be truthful, silence can protect privilege, preventing suicide can cross boundaries, and polished help can still be coercion.

Based on Martin Brest's 1992 film Scent of a Woman. The account corrects a prior interpretive error: Frank needs Charlie as a sighted guide and sends him away before attempting suicide; the film does not establish that he hired the boy as a witness to his death.
