The Assembly Line

Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 film Modern Times. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.

Modern Times cuts from sheep moving in a flock to workers pouring from a subway entrance. The comparison is not subtle, and it does not need to be. Chaplin wants the first structure visible before a single individual face can organize our sympathy.

I. A meaningful task divided past meaning

On the line, each worker repeats one fragment: turn two nuts, strike a piece, pass it onward. The product exists only across the sequence. The individual gesture has no purpose its performer can complete or inspect.

This organization creates efficiency by separating the worker from the whole. It also makes replacement easy. The line needs the gesture, not the person who has learned it.

II. Management without physical presence

The factory president watches on a screen and orders sections to accelerate. When the Tramp hides in the washroom for a cigarette, the president’s face appears on the wall. In 1936 the device was comic speculation. Its logic is familiar now: supervision can be immediate while the supervisor remains elsewhere.

Visibility travels upward. The worker is inspectable; management’s own bodily conditions remain offscreen.

III. Lunch as unused capacity

A company demonstrates an automatic feeding machine that will eliminate the lunch break and keep workers producing while they eat. The machine malfunctions spectacularly. Beneath the slapstick is a coherent calculation: if a human activity does not produce output, convert it into a simultaneous input.

Nobody asks which worker should volunteer. The foreman points. Replaceability governs experimental risk as well as production.

IV. The gesture escapes the factory

After being pulled through the gears, the Tramp cannot stop tightening anything that resembles two nuts—buttons, noses, fire hydrants. His breakdown is not an abstract collapse. It has the precise shape of his assigned motion.

The factory no longer needs to command the body because repetition has installed the command inside it.

V. The line continues

He is removed and hospitalized. Production resumes with another worker occupying the place. This is the film’s coldest fact: a human can be destroyed by the task without the task registering a loss.

The assembly line is not merely a background for the Tramp’s comedy. It is a protagonist with continuity, appetite, and a time scale longer than any worker it consumes.
