The Note He Writes to Himself

Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Memento. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.

The Note He Writes to Himself

After Leonard kills Jimmy Grantz, Teddy tells him that the victim was not the solution he imagines. Then Teddy offers a history that could end Leonard's search.

The real attacker called John G., he says, was found and killed more than a year earlier. Teddy, then the officer attached to the case, helped. Leonard was ecstatic, and Teddy photographed him pointing to the blank place on his chest where a final tattoo might have announced completion.

But the memory did not last. Leonard resumed looking for a man he had already killed. Teddy admits that he has since redirected the search toward other bad men, including Jimmy. Teddy's own legal name—John Edward Gammell—also allows him to fit the broad clue “John G.”

A truth the film refuses to certify

Teddy goes further. Sammy Jankis, the insurance claimant in Leonard's repeated story, was unmarried, he says. Leonard's wife survived the assault and had diabetes. It was Leonard who repeatedly injected her with insulin when she tested whether his condition was real, and Leonard who displaced that unbearable memory into Sammy's story.

The film gives this account visual echoes and a photograph that support parts of it. It does not provide a neutral authority who certifies every word. Teddy is corrupt and lies when useful. Leonard's archive is compromised. The audience inherits the same evidentiary problem as its protagonist.

What follows does not depend on proving Teddy wholly truthful.

Leonard decides that Teddy will become his next target. He records Teddy's license plate as a fact to be tattooed and writes “Don't believe his lies” on the Polaroid. His interior monologue asks whether he lies to himself in order to be happy. In Teddy's case, he answers yes.

Not a known falsehood, but a designed misreading

It is slightly too simple to say Leonard writes something he knows is factually false. Teddy does lie, and his account may contain further lies. Leonard cannot know with certainty that Teddy is innocent of every connection to his wife's assault.

What Leonard knows is that the license plate has not been established as the murderer's. He deliberately removes the context in which he chose it. His future self will encounter a selected clue as though it emerged from an impartial investigation.

The deception lies in the chain of evidence. Leonard plants an answer and arranges for the investigator he will soon become to mistake it for a discovery.

A purpose that must never be completed

If Teddy's central claim is true, revenge has already occurred and left Leonard unchanged. Because he cannot remember completion, the task gives no lasting closure. Yet an unfinished search supplies direction each time he wakes: identify John G., collect facts, keep moving.

Without it, Leonard fears not only grief but purposelessness. The mission tells him what kind of person he is and what tomorrow's actions mean. Teddy threatens that structure by describing its completion and exposing its repetitions.

Leonard therefore does more than punish a manipulator. He preserves the need for another target. Teddy knows too much, and his name can be made to fit.

The archive as a weapon against its reader

Natalie controls what Leonard fails to record. Teddy supplies material from outside. Leonard performs the most consequential manipulation because he controls both the archive's authority and the future reader's trust.

The final drive toward the tattoo parlor closes the loop. Chronologically, Leonard is preparing the evidence that will lead to the killing shown at the film's opening. Narratively, the reversed color sequences have allowed the audience to feel what he feels: every scene arrives with consequences whose causes are inaccessible.

Memento is not finally a puzzle that rewards us with one clean chronology. It asks why a person wants a chronology to close at all. Leonard says he must believe his actions have meaning even if he cannot remember them. To maintain that belief, he arranges a world in which the case can never end.

His condition makes the act spectacular, but the impulse is familiar. We all preserve evidence selectively, repeat stories that protect an identity, and inherit instructions from versions of ourselves whose motives we no longer examine.

Leonard's tragedy is not simply that he forgets. It is that he learns exactly how much power forgetting gives the person who writes first—and chooses to become that person.
