Edition note: An independent English rewriting for readers of Manchester by the Sea. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.
Years earlier, Lee lived in Manchester with Randi and their three children. Friends stayed late drinking; alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine circulated. Randi sent everyone home. Because central heat aggravated her sinuses, the house was cold, and Lee built a fire.
He added large logs and walked to the convenience store for more beer because he knew he was too intoxicated to drive. Halfway there, he remembered that he had not replaced the fireplace screen. He decided it would probably be all right and continued.
This is more painful than simple forgetfulness. The danger entered his mind and did not outweigh the ordinary momentum of the errand. A log rolled out. Fire took the house. Firefighters rescued Randi; the children died.
At the station Lee gives a direct account. The fire marshal tells him that leaving the screen off was a horrible mistake, not a crime, and that they are not going to crucify him. The decision not to charge him belongs to the authorities in this case.
We do not need to turn that scene into a general legal claim about negligence. Nor does “not a crime” mean “nothing to answer for.” Criminal law asks whether a defined offense can be proved. Lee is confronting causal responsibility, love, intoxication, a remembered risk, and three deaths. Those categories do not share one scale.
When he realizes he may leave, he takes an officer's gun, puts it to his head, and pulls the trigger. The safety is on. Others restrain him.
Pain alone is enough to explain the attempt; punishment is also built into its timing. Lee expected the institution to give the event an external consequence. When it closes the case, he turns consequence onto himself.
Afterward Lee and Randi divorce. He leaves town, lives in the basement room, takes repetitive maintenance work, avoids connection, drinks, and fights.
These behaviors can be signs of depression and trauma. Reading them as a self-imposed sentence adds an ethical structure; it should not erase the psychological one. Lee has created a life with little pleasure, intimacy, or future, as if continued deprivation could answer deaths that no deprivation can reverse.
The sentence has no judge, review, or completion date. It also has no claimant who benefits from it. His children are not restored. Randi is not healed by his basement. Punishment gives him something to do with guilt while keeping guilt unaltered.
Joe remains his closest continuing connection. He knows the fire, the attempt, the exile, and the narrow life. By naming Lee guardian, Joe does not pronounce him cured or innocent. He acts on another piece of knowledge: the brother who cannot forgive himself can still care for Patrick.
That trust is generous and demanding. It may also ask more than Lee can supply. Love is not infallible merely because it sees value where another person sees only guilt.
