Reading Inception

Three essays on the idea Cobb plants in Mal, the manufactured reconciliation that makes Fischer’s manipulation feel like freedom, and the top Cobb finally leaves spinning behind him.

Inception builds its spectacle out of nested dreams, folding cities, and elastic time. Its deepest problem, however, is authorship. When does an idea become mine? Can a choice still count as free when someone else has designed the emotional route by which I arrive at it? What happens when the instrument used to test reality is bound to the very intervention that made reality doubtful?

These essays follow that problem through three figures. Mal shows how a rescue can destroy the conditions under which another person corrects herself. Fischer shows why benevolent-seeming manipulation may work better than cruelty. Cobb’s final turn from the spinning top does not answer the film’s ontological riddle; it changes what he is willing to ask for certainty, and what he is finally prepared to attend to.
