The Moth Was Never Removed
1947 年 9 月 9 日下午三点四十五分,哈佛 Mark II 的操作员在 F 面板第 70 号继电器里找到一只飞蛾。他们把它取出来,用胶带贴进当天的日志本,在旁边写下一行字:「(moth) in relay… First actual case of bug being found.」格蕾丝·霍珀后来在讲座里反复讲这件事,debug 由此从一个笑话变成整个行业的动词。伦敦艺术家、地理学者 Shaheer Tarar 的网页作品《(moth) in relay》从这里岔开一步:假如那只蛾一直没有被取出来。它至今困在机器里,自主地沿着全球互联网基础设施飞行;每定位到一个节点——一座数据中心,或一处海底光缆登陆站——它就去实时网络上翻找关于这座设施的资料,想在这张全球继电网里找到出口。
飞蛾在那台机器里的位置,是余项的教科书式样本。Mark II 是一台彻底形式化的装置:每一次继电器的开合都写在设计之内,整台机器就是一套穷举过的可能性。飞蛾不在这套穷举里。它不是设计的一部分,也不是设计的反面,它是形式化没有也无法消化的那一点。而工程师的反应,正是凿构循环里最标准的一凿:取出、贴住、加注、归档。这里要说清楚一件常被搞反的事——bug 作为「故障」的行话在 1947 年之前早就存在,爱迪生 1878 年的信里就这么用;日志本那句话的笑点恰恰建立在这个词已经存在之上。所以那天真正发生的不是造词,是给一个已有的词配上标本。命名一旦合拢,余项就不再是余项:此后每一个异常都有归属的词、归属的流程、归属的工时。那一页连同那只蛾如今躺在史密森尼美国国家历史博物馆的藏品里。它被钉住了两次。
Tarar 拒绝的正是「取出」这个动作。让蛾留在机器里,等于把它从已构里放回流通——它重新变回那个没有名字、没有归属流程、还在动的东西。但更要紧的是它现在飞过的地形。互联网对外呈现的形态是纯逻辑:协议、地址、路由,一张没有地方的图。它的余项恰恰是它的地理——机房、冷却水、被征用的土地、光缆上岸的那一段海滩。Tarar 的正职是研究互联网地理的博士生(同时在中央圣马丁任教),所以他的蛾不在抽象拓扑里飞,它在建筑物之间飞。而每次停靠,它读的也不是艺术家写好的文本,是此刻网络上关于这座设施的现成句子。这件作品没有固定内容,它由基础设施关于自己身体留下的沉渣现场拼出来。趋光是蛾的本能;数据中心是一栋灯火通明、恒温、并且严格防虫封闭的建筑。它一直朝着不能进也不能出的光飞。
出口当然找不到。这不是遗憾,是结构本身——一个找到出口的余项立刻就变成已构。蛾之所以还活着,正因为它一直失败。这里还嵌着一层今天才成立的回路:它在网上读到的关于数据中心的句子,越来越多是由住在数据中心里的系统写出来的。蛾在自己的胃壁上找门。委任这件作品的展览《Ghost in the Loop》自己给出的题词是「作品不再专为人类观众而作」,那句话说的正是这个:网络已经开始大规模地对自己说话,而这件作品把一只不识字的虫子放进这场独白里,让它逐字读。
要把已构和还活着的部分分开。拍数据中心这件事早就凿完了:Timo Arnall 的《Internet Machine》(2014) 进 Telefónica 的机房拍,Ingrid Burrington 的《Networks of New York》(2016) 把纽约街面上的井盖标记做成田野指南,Trevor Paglen 潜到被窃听的海底光缆上按快门。这一支有名字,叫「基础设施崇高」,名字合拢已经十年了。媒介考古学有名字(Zielinski、Parikka)。故障艺术有名字(Menkman 的《Glitch Studies Manifesto》,2010)。这只蛾一样都不是。它不是故障——机器没坏,它按设计运行得很好;它也不是基础设施摄影——没有人去现场,图像由网络自己供出;它更不是媒介考古,因为它不去挖已经发生的事,它去推演一件没有发生的事,并且让这件没发生的事此刻仍在运行。这个交叉点目前没有词。等有了词,它就会变成那个词的例子。
现在看比以后看要紧,有两只钟在走。一只是命名的钟:这件作品眼下同时挂在两个位置上——摄影师画廊(The Photographers' Gallery)与伦敦歌德学院的委任项目里,以及 2026 年 Tiny Awards 的年度网站入围名单上,公众投票开到 9 月 25 日。凿子已经举起来了,但那一凿还没落下。另一只钟更硬:这件作品读的是实时网络。线上展期排到 2028 年底,可 2028 年的它不会是今天的它,因为那时关于这些设施的句子已经换过一轮。数据中心是当下地球上更替最快的建成环境之一,蛾今天飞过的一半节点,到那时会被扩建、改名或转手。你今天看到的,是这张网络在这一刻对自己身体的描述——而这个状态哪里都没有存档。这是少见的一种作品:它的余项会被「以后再看」这个动作本身吃掉。

Grace Hopper retold the story in lectures for decades, and debugging went from a joke to the industry's verb. (moth) in relay, a web work by the London-based artist and geographer Shaheer Tarar, forks one step off that page: suppose the moth had never been taken out. It is still inside the machine, flying autonomously across global internet infrastructure, and each time it locates a node — a data centre, a submarine cable landing station — it browses the live web for information about that facility, hoping to find a way out of the global relay.
The moth's position inside that machine is a textbook specimen of the remainder. The Mark II was a fully formalised device: every relay closure was written into the design, and the machine simply was its enumerated set of possibilities. The moth is not in the enumeration. It is not part of the design and it is not the opposite of the design; it is the bit that formalisation neither did nor could digest. And the engineers' response was the most standard cut in the whole chisel-construct cycle: extract, tape, caption, file. One thing is usually got backwards here — "bug" as engineering slang for a fault long predates 1947; Edison was using it that way in 1878, and the logbook joke depends entirely on the word already existing. So what happened that afternoon was not the coining of a term. It was the fitting of a specimen to a term that was already there. Once the naming closes, the remainder stops being one: from then on every anomaly has a word that owns it, a procedure that owns it, an hour of billable labour that owns it. That page, moth still attached, now sits in the collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. It has been pinned twice.
What Tarar refuses is the extraction. Leaving the moth inside returns it from the already-construct back into circulation — it becomes, again, the thing with no name, no owning procedure, and no fixed position, still moving. But the sharper move is the terrain it now moves through. The internet presents itself as pure logic: protocols, addresses, routes, a graph with no places in it. Its remainder is precisely its geography — halls, cooling water, expropriated land, the stretch of beach where the cable comes ashore. Tarar's day job is a PhD on internet geographies, alongside teaching at Central Saint Martins, so his moth does not fly a topology; it flies real estate. And at each stop it reads no text the artist wrote. It reads whatever the live web happens to be saying about that facility right now. The work has no fixed content: it is assembled on the spot out of the sediment the infrastructure has left about its own body. Phototaxis is a moth's instinct. A data centre is a building that is lit, climate-held, and sealed against insects. It keeps flying toward a light it can neither enter nor leave.
The exit is never found. That is not a shortfall, it is the structure — a remainder that finds the exit converts instantly into a construct. The moth stays alive because it keeps failing. And there is a loop here that only closed recently: the sentences it reads about data centres are increasingly written by systems housed in data centres. It is looking for a door in the wall of its own stomach. Ghost in the Loop, the commission the piece belongs to, frames its works as no longer made specifically for human audiences — which is exactly this: the network has begun talking to itself at scale, and Tarar has put an illiterate insect inside the monologue and made it read every word.
The already-construct has to be separated out from what is still alive. Photographing data centres was chiselled through years ago: Timo Arnall's Internet Machine (2014) shot inside a Telefónica facility, Ingrid Burrington's Networks of New York (2016) turned the manhole markings of a city into a field guide, Trevor Paglen dove to the tapped undersea cables and pressed the shutter. That line has a name — the infrastructural sublime — and the name closed over it a decade ago. Media archaeology has a name (Zielinski, Parikka). Glitch has a name (Menkman's Glitch Studies Manifesto, 2010). This moth is none of them. It is not a glitch: nothing is broken, the machinery runs exactly as designed. It is not infrastructure photography: nobody goes to the site, the images are surrendered by the network itself. It is not quite media archaeology either, because it does not dig up something that happened — it extrapolates something that did not happen, and keeps that non-event running in the present tense. There is no word for the intersection yet. When one arrives, the piece becomes an example of it.
Seeing it now matters more than seeing it later, and two clocks are running. The first is the naming clock: the work currently hangs in two places at once — inside a commission from The Photographers' Gallery and Goethe-Institut London, and on the 2026 Tiny Awards Site of the Year shortlist, where public voting is open until 25 September. The chisel is raised. It has not come down. The second clock is harder. The piece reads the live web. The online exhibition runs to the end of 2028, but the work in 2028 will not be the work today, because the sentences about these facilities will have turned over by then. Data centres are among the fastest-changing built environments on earth right now; half the nodes the moth visits today will have been expanded, renamed or sold. What you see is this network's description of its own body at this particular moment — and that state is archived nowhere. It is the rare piece whose remainder is eaten by the act of getting round to it later.
