戴夫·布莱尔(Dave Blair)那台机器叫 The Light Herder,也叫 God Machine。原理是最老的一种视频反馈:一台摄像机拍一块屏,屏上放的就是这台摄像机此刻拍到的东西。八十年代把摄像机对着电视的人都撞见过这个效果。他做的事情是把这个回路做成一件木工活,再一寸一寸地把它变成可控的。2023 年那版的物料表是他自己写的:枫木、桃花心木、铝,三台摄像机,五块 HD 反馈监视器,三台 Roland 视频切换台,两块观察监视器,两片分光镜玻璃,一路视频输入。玻璃是 50/50 的提词器玻璃,一半透过一半反射,所以摄像机既能看穿到上面那块屏,又能在同一片玻璃里看见下面那块屏的倒影。2026 年 8 月,他贴出一条标题叫「4K Resolution Finally Achieved!」的帖子:定制的 4K 屏,带模拟色相/饱和度/亮度/对比度旋钮,五块。这个目标他 2020 年 12 月就写在博客上了。
这些图像没有作者端的模型。没有人写迭代式,没有人画那些蕨叶,机器里也不存在任何一处结构对应"蕨叶"。他自己列过"这个宇宙的法则":玻璃的角度、上面那块屏的高度、下面那块屏的位置和旋转、两块屏各自旋钮的位置、摄像机的旋转和位置。这几项里没有一项长得像输出。图像是回路跑完之后剩下的东西,严格意义上的余项。这个系列平时要在一件作品内部去找那道尚未被消化的边,这一次不必找:可见的表面全部是余项,作品的全部内容就是形式化装不下的那一部分。他写过一句"看起来像魔法,其实是数学"——但这句里的数学不是他写的,是玻璃和光自己算的。
两个细节把这件事钉死。其一,他解释过图案从哪儿来:下面那块屏转到什么角度,就出什么形。两块 Panasonic 屏底边的厂标彼此挨着时出水母;下面那块的厂标朝外时出蕨;下面那块与上面那块垂直时出谢尔宾斯基三角。厂标是屏幕上最不属于"画面"的东西,是商业身份留在边框上的残渣,在产品设计里它的全部任务就是待在画面之外。在这台机器里它是种子几何。其二,有天晚上他花了几小时想复现前一晚那道螺旋,怎么调都只出圆环;最后回看录像才发现,螺旋来自佳能机身上那颗红色录制指示灯的反光——而那晚他觉得没拍到好东西,一直没按录制,灯是灭的。指示灯的唯一功能是报告机器自身的状态,它不是画面的一部分,它却是那道螺旋的成因。要留下证据就必须录,而"录"这个动作本身是方程里的一项。他另有一句更干脆的自陈:最喜欢的那一段,"我一直没能复现出来"。
第三件事关于旋钮,是凿构循环最清楚的一次现场。标清电视上,色相/对比度/亮度/饱和度是给用户的,那时的屏幕还承认自己是一件器物,还有话语权。格式成熟之后这些旋钮被取消了:一块成熟的显示器被定义成透明的,它的美德就是不添加任何东西。2007 年在佛罗里达,布莱尔把电视电路板上这四个旋钮拆焊下来,加长导线引到摄像机的轭架上,好让他一边转旋钮一边改摄像机的位置,还在括号里补了一句"关键全在旋钮"。到 HD 时代他说得更明白:这些旋钮"通常只在老的标清电视机上才有,而它们对做视频反馈至关重要"。二十年后要上 4K,他只剩下定制这一条路。余项不只是格式从内容里排除掉的东西,也是格式从控制面上排除掉的东西——每提高一分完成度,就少一个把手;想把把手装回去,就得绕到产品背面去。
Hackaday 8 月 27 日那篇报道的评论区吵了一场,很值得读。一位读者说这里面没有任何"模拟"成分:数字摄像机拍液晶屏,DSP 调色,连旋钮的电压都被 Teensy 立刻数字化了。布莱尔回复说,"模拟"在这里指的不是有没有芯片,而是"没有计算机在生成图像,摄像机是在真实世界里被移动的,有镜头,有会转的旋钮"。两个人都对,只是各自站在自己那套完备的词汇里。模拟/数字这对词是为描述信号如何被承载而造的,它没有一个格子留给"图像从哪里来"这个问题。这是命名缺口的标准形状:不是冷门,是现有词汇的分类轴根本不过这个点。一件已经命名完的艺术不会引起这种争执;哪天不吵了,它就已构了。顺带一提,同一条线程里他还澄清了一件事——那些被指为数字管线延迟的东西是故意的,机器里有两台延时器,最多可以拨到 30 帧。别人眼里的管线残渣,在他手里是一个可调参数。
视频反馈作为门类当然早被消化过,白南准与 Vasulka 夫妇那一脉写在所有教科书里;布莱尔自己也不掩饰来源,他说第一次知道视频反馈是在侯世达的《哥德尔、埃舍尔、巴赫》里,而当前这套配置的灵感来自 Peter King 1997 年画的一张图。活着的不是门类,是这一台具体机器的逻辑:2003 年 Provincetown 的显像管原型,2007 年拆焊旋钮,2020 年 5 月换成两块 HD 屏加一台尼康 D810,2021 年的 Phase III,2023 年的 God Machine II,2026 年 8 月的五块 4K 屏——一个 2020 年 12 月写下的目标,走了五年半,中途每一步都改变了后一步的可能形状。他还把自己算进了回路:第二台摄像机对着他握杆的手,这个画面混进去,影响他看见的东西,再影响他怎么动手;操作者不在系统外面。现在还没有一个现成的词把这台机器接走。等图像流通得足够广,词会来的——"迷幻"、"模拟复兴"、"AI 之前的手作",随便哪个都够用,而且一旦贴上,你就不再是在看它,你是在看那个词。趁着还没有词,直接去看。

The principle is the oldest kind of video feedback there is: a camera pointed at a screen showing what the camera is seeing right now. Anyone who ever aimed a camcorder at a television in the eighties has stumbled into it. What Blair has done is build that loop as a piece of furniture and then, inch by inch, make it steerable. The parts list for the 2023 version is his own: maple, mahogany, aluminum, three cameras, five HD feedback monitors, three Roland video switchers, two viewing monitors, two sheets of beam splitter glass, and a video input. The glass is 50/50 teleprompter glass — half transmission, half reflection — so the camera can see through to the upper monitor and, in the same sheet, see the lower monitor's reflection. In August 2026 he posted "4K Resolution Finally Achieved!": custom 4K screens with analog hue/saturation/brightness/contrast knobs, five of them. He had written down that goal in December 2020.
There is no model of the picture anywhere on the author's side. Nobody wrote an iteration formula. Nobody drew the ferns. No part of the machine corresponds to a fern. Blair has listed what he calls the laws of this universe: the angle of the glass, the height of the upper monitor, the position and rotation of the lower monitor, the settings of both monitors' dials, and the rotation and position of the camera. Not one item on that list resembles the output. The image is what is left after the loop has run — a remainder in the strict sense. Usually this series has to go looking inside a work for the edge that hasn't been digested yet. Here there is no search: the entire visible surface is remainder, and the whole content of the work is the part the formalization cannot hold. He writes that it looks like magic but is really mathematics. True — except that he didn't write the mathematics. The glass and the light are doing it.
Two details settle the point. First, he has explained where the shapes come from: rotate the lower monitor and you change the family. Jellyfish appear when the two Panasonic logos along the monitors' bottom edges sit next to each other. Ferns appear when the lower monitor's logo faces outward. Sierpiński triangles appear when the lower monitor is perpendicular to the upper one. A manufacturer's logo is the least picture-like thing on a screen — commercial identity deposited on a bezel, whose entire job in product design is to stay outside the image. In this machine it is the seed geometry. Second, one night he spent hours trying to reproduce a spiral he had gotten the night before and could only get circles. Reviewing the footage, he realized the spiral had come from the reflection of the red record light on the front of the Canon — and that night, since nothing good was happening, he had never hit record, so the light was off. A record light exists only to report the machine's own state; it is not part of the picture, and it was the cause of the spiral. To have evidence you must record, and recording is a term in the equation. He is blunter elsewhere about his favorite output: he has not been able to replicate it.
The third thing is about the knobs, and it is the chisel-construct cycle caught in the act. On a standard-definition television, hue, contrast, brightness and saturation belonged to the user; the screen still admitted it was an object with a say in things. As the format matured those knobs were deleted. A mature display is defined as transparent, and its virtue is adding nothing. In Florida in 2007, Blair desoldered those four knobs off a TV's circuit board and lengthened their wires up to the camera yoke so he could turn them while moving the camera, adding in parentheses that it's all about the knobs. By the HD era he was explicit: those knobs are normally found only on old standard-definition sets, and they are all-important for making video feedback. Twenty years later, to reach 4K, custom fabrication was the only road left. A remainder isn't only what a format excludes from its content; it's what the format excludes from its control surface. Every increment of finish removes a handle, and putting a handle back means going around behind the product.
The comment thread under Hackaday's August 27 write-up is worth reading. One reader argued there is nothing analog here at all: a digital camera shooting an LCD, a DSP adjusting color, the knob voltages digitized on the spot by a Teensy. Blair replied that "analog" here doesn't refer to whether there are chips, but to the fact that no computer is generating the images, that the camera is moved in the real world, that there are lenses, that there are knobs that turn. Both are correct inside their own complete vocabulary. The analog/digital pair was built to describe how a signal is carried; it has no slot for the question of where an image comes from. That is what a naming gap actually looks like — not obscurity, but a classification axis that simply doesn't pass through this point. Art that has been fully named does not generate arguments like this one. When the argument stops, the work will be construct. One more thing surfaced in the same thread: the pipeline latency a critic read as a defect is deliberate. There are two frame delay units in the machine, dialable up to 30 frames. Somebody else's leftover is his parameter.
Video feedback as a genre was digested long ago — Paik, the Vasulkas, all of it in the textbooks — and Blair doesn't hide his sources: he first learned about video feedback in Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach, and credits a diagram Peter King drew in 1997 for the current configuration. What's alive isn't the genre, it's this particular machine's logic: a CRT prototype in Provincetown in 2003, the desoldered knobs in 2007, two HD monitors and a Nikon D810 in May 2020, Phase III in 2021, God Machine II in 2023, five 4K screens in August 2026 — a goal set down in December 2020 that took five and a half years, each step changing what the next step could be. He also counts himself into the loop: a second camera on his own hand at the rod, that image mixed in, altering what he sees, altering how he moves. The operator is not outside the system. Right now no ready-made word will come collect this machine. Once the images circulate widely enough a word will arrive — psychedelic, analog revival, pre-AI handmade, any of them will do the job — and the moment it lands you will be looking at the word instead of the thing. Go look while there is no word.
