Someone Lives in the Comments
源文件里躺着四段注释,署名是一个叫 H_T_M_L__S_P_R_I_T_E 的角色。
html-energy-sprite.neocities.org ↗HTML Day fell on August 8th this year. In London it ran from two until eight at SET Social in Peckham, and everyone who turned up spent the afternoon hand-writing a webpage. The one made by a person posting as danibloop looks, when you open it, almost empty: a small lime-green star borrowed from HTML Energy, a line asking whether you can feel the HTML energy, and then an instruction — press Command + Option + U and look at the source.
That is where the work is. Four blocks of comment text sit in the file, signed by a character called H_T_M_L__S_P_R_I_T_E. It asks whether you enjoy looking at these lines, which it calls "the underside of the embroidery," and how often you actually inspect the pages you browse. Then it makes a larger claim: marginalia is older than writing, as old as storytelling itself, and there has never been a linear story, a linear idea, or a linear website. In the last block it mentions that dani left it an incense offering — drawn in ASCII, three thin curls of smoke rising from a small burner — and suggests you might try greeting your own site's sprite the same way.
The proportions are worth counting. The page displays 295 characters of text. The comments contain 2,441. The sprite says more than eight times as much as the website does. Almost the entire work is read by the browser and then thrown away.
This is the remainder in the cleanest form available. An HTML parser is a formalizing device: it consumes a source file and produces a render tree. The comment is the one thing in that system that must be read and must not be used — not overlooked, but recognized and then deliberately excluded. The already-construct, the rendered page, depends on the parser's capacity to identify the comment and discard it. So the comment is not an accessory to the page; it is the reverse face of the condition that lets the page exist at all. What danibloop did was move in.
The gesture repeats at every level of her. The favourite element she lists on e2e is <noscript> — the tag that renders only when the main system fails to run, markup defined entirely by an absence. Her name elsewhere is thisisnotdaniela. And inside the work she appears exactly once, in the third person, mentioned by the sprite as the person who left the incense. She hasn't signed it; she is someone her own site's resident happens to bring up. Three layers, one move: take up residence on the discarded branch.
View-source has a history, of course. The notes, ASCII drawings and job ads that early pages hid in their markup have all been collected and honoured by now. But that material has finished a chisel-construct cycle. It has a name — view-source culture — it sits inside a nostalgia narrative, and it can be cited. What danibloop is doing is not the same shape: the comment is not an easter egg tucked behind the page, it is the whole work, and the page has demoted itself to a doorway. That logic has no name yet. It is not a standing category of net art, it is not ASCII art, it is not retro web. It was posted as a single link on a social network built to last one day (e2e.html.energy, made for HTML Day 2026), by someone with no art-world footprint, on a site that contains no outbound links at all. When it gets named it will become something else. For now it is still growing.
